The book contains 40 games to help memorize various levels of basic math facts. Each game requires some sort of dice, at least two players, and a paper copy of a game "board" that's printed in the book, along with instructions.If your goal is teaching basic math facts, and you've got at least two kids at roughly the same level, then this book will present ideas for making the drills less boring.If you're helping just one kid, beware: there are no solitaire games.If your goal is to teach higher-level problem-solving, or to inspire kids to understand that math is more than basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, then this book won't help.I usually think of a game as being fun, but this book doesn't contain any games that people would choose to play if they didn't have to. No "Yahtzees" in here.
The book is not what I expected it to be.The games are mostly race games, and the use of constructed polyhedrons seems hardly worth the effort.So, it has neither particularily nice educational nor gaming applications.The production values are quite high.If you are a second grade math teacher then you might ask the school to buy a copy of the book.Other than that limited application, I do not recommend this book.In service,Rich[...]
I taught a Hands-On math class and used a number of games from this book with great success. I already had plastic polyhedra dice, but there is the option of making your own from cardstock using the patterns in the front of the book. I printed out and laminated the game cards and organized the game pieces in file folders.Some games can be used in large class settings (30 students) while others work best with 2-8 players. These games have also been useful when tutoring students one-on-one. A game is a great way to review without boredom.I, for one, really enjoyed using this book with my students!
The book has some really good games in it. My students really enjoyed the ones we played in class. The games kept the students engaged and focused on the topics/subjects at hand.
