Little Suzette and her nursemaid enjoy daily walks in the handsome park near their home. Often, they see a tall, elegant lady strolling in the park with her tiny puppy. Then, a comical incident transforms Suzette and the puppy into friends. The time and place of this gentle story is Paris in the 1870s, when many fine artists were creating the exciting approach to painting called Impressionism. As it happens, little Suzette's Uncle Edgar is one of those artists. He is the famous Edgar Degas. One day, Uncle Edgar sends an artist to paint Suzette's picture. Imagine Suzette's surprise, when the artist turns out to be the tall lady from the park! And imagine Suzette's delight when the little puppy comes with her! The result of this enchanting meeting lives on to this day in an art masterpiece. For the woman was the major American artist, Mary Cassatt. Her painting of Suzette and the little dog, known as The Little Girl in the Blue Armchair, now hangs in the National Gallery of Art, in Washington, D.C. Among this book's many beautiful full-color illustrations is a reproduction of the story's painting.

This book is a charming way to introduce Mary Cassatt or to use as a realistic fiction book when teaching children about artists. The author brings Cassatt's world to life through the antics of her charming dog and a little girl she eventually paints. A good addition to an artists' study unit.

This is an absolutely charming book concerning the events that led up to the famous Marry Cassatt painting "Little Girl in a Blue Armchair." As the story opens we are introduced to the young girl named Suzette, whose nursemaid believes in taking daily outings, no matter the weather. During these outings they meet a tall American lady whose little doggie causes much mischief. The little doggie becomes a favorite of Suzette's and everybody else in the park, including the policeman. Through a series of coincidences, Mary Cassatt is selected to paint little Suzette's portrait. And as the portrait reveals, both the little girl and the doggie, would rather be out playing in the park rather than stuck inside and having to sit still for a portrait!

If you are looking to purchase a gift book for a child, I would suggest that you buy a Laurence Anholt book instead of this one. It did not hold my daughter's interest. We read it once, and we were done with it. I would not have felt bad about it if I had taken it out of the library. We did like seeing the artwork of Mary Cassatt, but it wasn't something that I would like to keep on my shelf permanently and take up space in my house. It was a nice way to introduce my daughter to Mary Cassatt, and she was able to identify the painter when we took her to the Philadelphia Museum of art. "Mommy look - A Mary Cassatt! So, I would say that it was successful in that regard.

I purchased this book for use in my classroom teaching our Meet the Masters program. The kids loved the story.. factual with some embellishment, the students were hooked!
