Morning Star Of The Reformation

When young John of Wycliffe arrives at Oxford University, he finds it a fascinating and perilous place. With his friend, Sebastian Ayleton, John experiences the terrible plague called the "Pestilence" (the Black Death), and he becomes involved in clashes between university factions as well as riots among the townspeople. Whenever he can find time away from his studies, John's favorite place is the inn of the Kicking Pony. There he and his companions discuss the political and religious issues of the day, and it is with his friends that he first shares his growing vision of an English Bible for all Englishmen to read. In the darkness of medieval England, John's pursuit of truth gleams like a solitary star: the morning star that promises the sunrise to come. He paved the way for the theologians of the next century and opened hearts in preparation for the great Reformation itself.

I recommend this book for students ages 10-13 who are studying Martin Luther and the Reformation. (I actually read it with my 9 year old, who is pretty bright. But I don't think it will hold the attention of most 9 year olds.) The book gives you a real good feel for how it was for the clergy in this time period and the tension that existed, and continued to be a problem, in a revolutionary time period for Christianity. I did not really understand the historical difference between Protestantism and Catholicism until I read this book, which is historical fiction. It is a great supplement to your textbook reading, which doesn't really give you a feel for how things were for individuals entering the clergy and sympathetic to the reformers' cause. I give it 3 stars because it took a little while to get into the story, but it is worth it, and it isn't too long to get through it. It will also explain the important role John Wycliffe played in this time period.

I read this book with my 9 and 7 year old children as part of our history. Not only does the book give a feel for the climate and culture of England at that time, it tells the story of John Wycliff who lived a sacrificial life fighting for the common people to have access to the Bible and Biblical preaching which undermined the Pope's power. Overall a real hero. His life, pre-Martin Luthur, helped to shape the reformation to bring common people into relationship with Christ. My children did not understand everything, but each of them gleaned from the book and truly enjoyed it.

Just finished reading this book as part of TOG's Year 2 week 10 reading with my son, who is 13. It was a quick read for him and he enjoyed it very much. As an adult / parent / teacher, I also enjoyed the book immensely. Not only was the story lovely, but it provided so many points from which to discuss John Wycliffe, English history, the beginnings of the Reformation, and the impact on the church and world that this man had. Very enjoyable, very inspiring.

This is one of the best pieces of historical fiction - ever. The author vividly brings us into the world of John Wycliffe - captivating story, characters are believable, excellent history as well as church history. The Reformation was a period of conflict in the religious arena, so be prepared! I think the cover could use some changes to appeal to young men, but if you can get them past the cover, the story takes them the rest of the way. I read this to my homeschooled young men - ages 12 and 15. They loved it. (They are very outdoors types that love a GREAT story).Another outstanding recommendation by Carole Joy Seid.I wish they would publish this in hardcover - it's that good.

This is a FANTASTIC book. It is well written and captivating. Most importantly it uncovers the LIES of the catholic church. Lies that they have propagated for thousands of years, and lies that the church continues to propagate. Sure it has some fictional characters to bring the story to life a bit, but the bones of this is all historical truth. Wycliffe was the spark of the Reformation. It was only by God's power and grace that he was not tortured and killed by the pope, who he correctly referred to as anit-Christ. If only they taught this stuff in school, how enlightned our country would be. The wicked church will have us back in the dark ages the first chance they get.
