I purchased this book for my 11 year old daughter after we started watching the movie. First off, I would like to discuss the binding and cover of the book. When you pick it up, it just feels special. The pressed board and textured hard cover make this book feel substantial and real, unlike many of the cheaper books you might buy today. The artwork on the front and inside of the covers is really beautiful (the photo on the website does it no justice.) If you want to be swept away into a different time and place, this is the book to do it with. So far my daughter has read three chapters and gotten some story holes from the movie filled in (what illness the mother had, what the girls' names mean...) which I believe is helping her appreciate reading the book more. If it was just the story in the movie it would be great, but expanding on the story gives her the "insider" knowledge to make her want to keep reading. After she finishes, I believe I'm going to read it as well!
This is a great addition to the movie: there are many details never discussed in the movie and we can get to know more about the family. It is true that I wanted more illustrations, but I will always want to see more of Miyazaki's work.
I bought this book for my daughter. She loves the movie totoro and was very excited to open the book. She is a bit young for it, but she likes me to read it to her. I think she will enjoy it even more when she is old enough to read it herself. She especially liked the map in the beginning of the book. She liked seeing where all the places in the story were located. There were not very many pictures and I do think they could have added a few more. What I liked most about the book was the quality. I definitely see it making a home on my daughter's shelf, rather then ending up in the storage bins we use for books. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a totoro fan.
Bought this for my 24yr old daughter. She watched this movie over and over when she was little. She loved it!! Wanted the bookso badly. She said it will always be a big part of her childhood. This story is wonderful for the young, creative mind.
This is a top-notch gift for any Miyazaki, Ghibli, or Totoro fan. It's small so it can travel, but it's a high-quality hardcover book. The illustrations are adorable and the addition of some information make Totoro's universe even more compelling for long-time fans. My favorite part is probably the map in the beginning of the book. This allows movie fans to really visualize where everything took place. Worth every penny and more.
Perfect. I bought this for myself and it was so fantastic I had to get a copy for my best friend for her birthday. This is the kind of thing every Totoro fan should have. The quality of the physical book is as satisfying as the words inside of it. Worth the cost.
My Neighbor Totoro is a favorite Miyazaki film. I love the detailed background showing the beauty of the countryside. The kids in the film are so cute, especially their interactions with the little nature spirits. Totoro is an mysterious figure who seems kind of scary at first, but is really a wonderful hug-able guy. I liked the book because it fills in some of the details that are not completely clear in the movie. I think it is a good companion to the movie for kids and grandkids. I imagine that it could be a beloved read-aloud bedtime story book for the youngsters. The illustrations are also nice. The line drawings are understated, but the spirit of the characters still shines through.
Gave it as a gift. It's a beautiful edition, written in simple prose. If you're looking for literary heft, you may want to stick to the movie--this is more of a present for kids or a collector's item for Miyazaki fans than a New York Times heavy hitter. That said, The printed cover — made with some kind of matte-finish, densely woven fabric, is gorgeous. The sketches are similarly beautiful, and show sort of a toned-down black and white version of the art from the film. It's almost as if the artist were drawing it out for his own kids' bedtime story. There are also maps in the end pages that can enhance a younger fan's grip on the story, done with the same Miyazaki touch as the rest of the book.
