I love the way Kathryn Lasky writes. I really do. She describes landscapes as rich and beautiful as those of Brian Jacques while managing to address issues of spirituality, religion, tradition, family, and prejudice in surprisingly complex ways that (usually) are not heavyhanded and provide opportunities to discuss the issues with your child, if he or she is ready, or to ignore them and just enjoy the adventure. Her good characters tend to be unquestionably good, but they make mistakes and have growth and learning opportunities along the way, which keeps them interesting. Her evil characters can be deliciously evil or, in many cases, layered and capable of change. Some of the plot developments can get a bit grim. Spirit Wolf hits that note right off the bat, putting Faolin in a position where there's a lot he has to figure out in a hurry and requiring a tremendous amount of thought from wolves whose traditions have served them well but now need to be re-examined.My son is 11 and tore through this book. The vocabulary is easy enough for a 3rd grader to get through the book and learn new words from context (Lasky is very adept at this - her writing is just challenging enough without seeming stilted or artificially pedantic). The themes are accessible on many levels, which makes the book enjoyable for my now-fifth grade child and for me (WAY past fifth grade).I only wish the book had been longer.
I have loved all of the books so far in this series and this one does not disappoint! It makes me very eager for the 6th book! Lasky is a great writer, and if you liked her Guardians of Ga'Hoole books, you will love these too! Faolan is a great lead character, and you really feel for him!
This is a great book and has one of the best beginnings of a book I have ever read. Also there will be a lot of shocking things in this book. For example someone on the watch has a pup and every deformed wolf will be mended. If you like this series you should read Guardians of Ga'hoole also by Kathryn Lasky and Warriors by Erin Hunter
This book will defintly keep you on the edge of your seat. We learn about Faloon and his past and it just makes me happy knowing that i got into this series. Just another great book by Kathryn Lasky.
"Hmm well I loved this book and I can't believe Calia was the mate of Heep.." he shivered when he said the name "And I thought Aliac was a different wolf...." he murmured " Heep is such a Byrfolsch [byr-fol-sch] meaning fool, you know, I made it up" Tanook grumbled Heeps rout killed Bronka my best friend... my sister..." -$ketch out!-
Chapter 1 left me feeling sad and I thought the worst had come. But chapter 2 left me feeling relieved and I was able to continue reading. After reading these, I now am interested in trying the Guardians of Ga'Hoole.
My daughter and I both really enjoyed this entire series. We each read the books almost non-stop. After reading this series, she requested the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series. Both are great series if you are looking to get your child interested in reading.
I have always enjoyed this series. Ever since the very first book. All the characters from past books came together at the end and that gives me hope that this race of wolves, bears and owls can survive in a new world known as the far blue. I loved this so much that I got two stuffed wolves and named them Folan and Edme! Cheers to the next magnificent book! ;)
