Great story for a classroom discussion. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is very sweet descibing the life of a fish called Jangles. My students have read this book over and over again and find something new each time they read it.
I teach First Grade and used this book for the "Gear and Bait" portions of my unit on Ohio's Great River and Lakes and the recreation they provide for Ohio families. The artwork is superb, but the story line is only mediocre. I felt like the first 6 or 7 pages were great, but then David Shannon had to really stretch to come up with an ending to bring the story to a close. It does allow for the children to utilize drawing conclusions and also allows you to stop before reading the last page to have the students predict what the character will do and then to write their own ending. The students, however, LOVE this book and will ask to have it read over and over. In all, I will use this book again next year, even though it isn't Shannon's best writing.
This is really a favorite, such a fun, well-done story of a fabled fish who eludes being caught for many years. The boys especially love it as it reminds them of some stores we tell about a fish in our summer lake.
I did not expect the reactions. My students, especially the fellows who like to mess around while I read aloud were instantly attracted to the story-telling and visual images. There aren't many quality stories about fishing for children and it has a timeless feel to it. Of course, there is a lesson kids can walk away with. I highly recommend buying this book!
Jangles, a big fish story by David ShannonChildren's audio book about a boy who is trying to catch the ever illusive fish. He has so many hooks hanging from his mouth and has never been caught. One story states the fish saved a baby that had fallen from a canoe. The fish brings him to his cave in the water, very far down. When they go back to the surface the boy wraps the line around the fish because nobody would believe he had caught the giant fish. The right thing should be done...I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
Although I am not a big fan of David Shannon's illustrations I, and the family, did enjoy this story. A boy is remembering how his father told him lots of stories and Jangles is one of them.Jangles lived in Big Lake. He was given that name due to all the lures and fishhooks in his jaw. "They clinked and clattered as he swam." Although he ate a lot of things, including beavers, the story goes that he did not have a taste for kids and in fact rescued one. Through the years many folks tried to catch Jangles but to no avail. One day, however, the boy's father got him and had quite the imaginary adventure. Was that the end of Jangles? You'll have to read to find out!Well written, captivating story with a lovely ending.
My grandchildren, aged 4-6, asked me to read the book several times, which tells me that the book succeeds. It probably isn't a favorite, but they liked the story and were glad the boy let the fish go. They did not get the idea of 'a fish story' as grown ups think of it.
In Jangles, the author uses the voice of a grandfather, telling a story about a legendary fish to set up an ending that is exciting to both kids and adults. The illustrations are fantastic, and even if you don't love fish, you won't be able to resist ;) We borrowed Jangles from the library, but we had to go ahead and buy it for our own collection.
