Though this series of An I Can Read Book is labeled as a Level 1 Beginning Reading Book, I felt that it is more of a Level 2 book because of some of the higher vocabulary used. My daughter is five-and-a-half and will start kindergarten this fall, and we both felt that these books were a step up from other level one books, for example the Step Into Reading series. Though she was able to read this book independently, I just feel parents should be aware that this book has some advanced vocabulary and complex sentence structure which beginning readers might have some difficulty with, e.g. 'smokestack','engineer', 'caboose', 'conductor', 'freight', etc.The books in the series have engaging story lines and each page has beautiful full-color illustrations. This story is about the bears taking a steam train trip across Bear Country. The cubs are curious and want to know how the train functions, which they discover with the help of Grizzly Jones. The color illustrations in this title are particularly vivid. This is an excellent series that will motivate young children to read.

My son who is 2 y 10 mo LOVES trains, is partial to the Berenstain Bears, and hence picked this book out himself. The book is a hit. Unlike most Berenstain books, there is no underlying lesson here. It is just a story about the family taking a train ride. The story is interesting though and rather complete as it relates to the details of a train ride for a fiction story written for young readers. There is also lots to see and discuss in the artwork on each page. My son has me read it multiple times in a row. Definitely a great purchase for us.

My toddler made me read this 2 times in a row when he got it. Then he pretended to read it to himself. He's a train fanatic but the Berenstein Bears books always seem to have the right amount of story line & language to delight him. I loved adding it to his collection :)

Just like me growing up, my 2 year old loves the Berenstain Bears. We read this one frequently. These I Can Read books don't have the number of words or language that the other Berenstain Bear books have. But they're shorter for the limited attention span. Some of the wording bothers me as a teacher; 2 simple sentences versus combining it into a complex sentence. I sometimes change it while reading to him. My son loves to read this one, and that's what is important.

Pros:1. Good for a kid who's a train lover. They not only are taking a train trip, but also get to tour the train and learn about the various parts/people on a train.2. Age appropriate, family friend story line.Cons:1. As a kid, I liked the Berenstain bears, but now, as a parent and adult, I feel as though there are many better illustrated options out there. They're illustrated the same way they always have been, but I can tell that my kids aren't as drawn in by these drawings compared to other books produced under the I Can Read series.2. The reading level feels a little off to me. It's definitely not a "My First" level, but it's borderline Level 2? And some of the words introduced aren't common words (like "caboose" which is great for this book, probably not going to be useful outside of this book).Though I'm not disappointed to have bought this book, I think there are definitely better "I Can Read Level 1" books out there...

My 5 year old is obsessed with trains and Berenstain Bears! This is a perfect book for early readers and is one of my child's first books he is trying to read. Great length and contains many early sight words. Highly recommended!

Our grandson will really love getting this book. He and grandpa love trains and since he is just starting to read it is doubly appreciated.

I'm grateful the author continues the series, but it's less authentic and lower quality art than the original. But great themes and positive educational messages.
