As you can see from some of the reviews below, this book has been mis-hyped and overmarketed by its cover; what it *really* is, is a chance to reprint Roald Dahl's fine memoir of stray childhood memories for every month of the year, written late in his life, and originally published as "My Year." "My Year" is out of print now, I think, which is a shame because it is a short but charming read, by turns wistful and humorous. Bits of that lovely memoir for kids are reprinted and woven through this new volume. However, be it said that these bits are sadly abridged ones, perhaps to appeal to a slightly younger audience in say, 2nd or 3rd grade, instead of the 4th and 5th graders "My Year" might originally have been aimed at. And yes, there is also short chapter originally written for "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and wisely deleted, but here included to grab your attention. (There are also a few desultory inclusions such as recipes and a profile of illustrator Quentin Blake to pad it out.) Fans of Roald Dahl will be happy to own this volume, not because it sheds much light on "Charlie," but because it offers the chance to bring parts of "My Year" back into print, albeit bundled into this somewhat strange collection of odds and ends.
This is a sweet little hybrid of fiction and non-fiction for Dahl enthusiasts of all ages. It's a veritable chocolate "chomp"-endium and an author biography melted into one small volume. Here's what you get:*Fun facts about Roald Dahl's life.*A deleted chapter and alternate ending for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.*A quiz to test your knowledge about Charlie's story.*A month by month account of Dahl's most and least favorite things about the seasons.*Some tips and encouragement for aspiring young writers.*Recipes from Mr. Wonka's Chocolate Factory.*A whole lot of other entertaining and informative trivia.I was happy to learn that Dahl was a nature lover and devoted birdwatcher like me. His school report cards were funny, but also sad because his schoolmasters were so unkind. "This boy is an indolent and illiterate member of the class." "He reminds me of a camel." How rude! Just goes to show, future great achievers don't always fare well in the classroom.
I am a fan of Dahl's and generally read his adult themed books. I got this one sort of on a whim plus it was low priced. I enjoyed reading it and it was more full of tidbits about the history of his writing of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. From the characters he started with and the ones that he discarded. Also tidbits about the writer himself.
Loved Roald Dahl as a kid. This is kind of an odd collection of Roald Dahl thoughts and ideas. It does contain one missing chapter from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.Lots of better Roald Dahl choices.
It's a quick read, but it's very clearly aimed at the young reader with a short attention span. It's a collection of unrelated snippets of information released after Dahl's death. The ten or so pages that illuminate his writing style and drafts of the Chocolate Factory was good, but the rest is not particularly noteworthy.
Cute book about a great author for kids and adults...fun facts, cool stories about the greatest movie made - "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". Enjoyed it and I am over 50!
I thought this book would have more to it with the missing chapter - but that is just what it is. The rest of the book is about Roald Dahl's life - interesting, but being a second grade teacher - the kids aren't too interested in that.
I like it read it there will be ingredients for chocolate and recipes it was very interesting so please read it. Signed justin
