Eleven-year-old Charlie Reese has been making the same secret wish every day since fourth grade. She even has a list of all the ways there are to make the wish, such as cutting off the pointed end of a slice of pie and wishing on it as she takes the last bite. But when she is sent to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina to live with family she barely knows, it seems unlikely that her wish will ever come true. That is until she meets Wishbone, a skinny stray dog who captures her heart, and Howard, a neighbor boy who proves surprising in lots of ways. Suddenly Charlie is in serious danger of discovering that what she thought she wanted may not be what she needs at all. From award-winning author Barbara O'Connor comes a middle-grade novel about a girl who, with the help of a true-blue friend, a big-hearted aunt and uncle, and the dog of her dreams, unexpectedly learns the true meaning of family in the least likely of places. This title has Common Core connections.

How did it take me this long to discover Barbara O'Connor's books? Wow, what a voice! Charlie is the kind of main character you just want to bundle up in your arms and bring home- sassy, flawed and ultimately lovable. Her adopted parents Gus and Bertha and her new friend Howard are just as lovable. And who can resist a dog named Wishbone? Everyhing about this book is a delight. Would be perfect for strong readers in 3rd; any readers in 4th and 5th.

A beautiful story about a girl who finds acceptance and love in an unexpected place. Charlie, a girl with a temper and an urgent wish, grows out of her angry shell with the help of her loving aunt, a true friend and a stray dog. Young readers will connect to the well-drawn characters on many levels. WISH provides ample material for classroom discussion, while leaving kids with the assurance that, even if they feel alone, there is always hope. O'Connor's hallmark cadence and poignant description of the southern setting enhance the charm of this book. Teachers and parents: Add this wonderful novel to your read-aloud shelf.
