I wanted to like it, but I'm really stuck on the fact that this book seems to teach conditional love. It shows the dinosaur misbehaving repeatedly, and then redeeming itself by doing something nice. On every page that it shows the dinosaur doing the desirable behavior it will say, "when you (do desirable behavior), then I love you, I love you , my dinosaur. This is not a lesson that I wish to teach my children, that people (or dinosaurs) are only worthy of love when they exhibit the perfect behavior.
We have always thoroughly enjoyed the sing song pacing of the other "How does a dinosaur..." books, and the eager family chorus of "NO!!!!!!!!) that comes through as we go from page to page. However, in this book the dinosaur is viewed in a very negative light and even the way the parent in the book responds to the behaviors is off-kilter. It is a very important lesson to teach a child that they are loved no matter what they do- but to insinuate that it only takes them to look adorable after being rude is...well, just not healthy IMHO.It is very hard to read to our preschool/kindergarten children and find any enjoyment. With that said- I LOVE LOVE LOVE the other books in the series and give them as birthday presents to friends and families!
My 4 yr old son loves the How Do Dinosaurs... series. We have some of the board books like How Do Dinosaurs Count To Ten?, and some of the other hardcovers, such as How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? and How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food?.How Do Dinosaurs Say I Love You? explains to children that their parents love them all the time, even when they are naughty or moody. Usually the books in this series contrast bad behavior with good behavior, and end on a postive note. Not only are they entertaining, but if you look closely at the illustrations, the names of the dinosaurs are included on each page, adding to the educational value of each book.I added this one to my son's collection because I wanted him to realize that a good parent loves their child unconditionally, no one is perfect, and everyone has had a bad day. He also has a huge interest in anything to do with dinosaurs.If your child loves these books, and would like something a little more serious, check out DK First Dinosaur Encyclopedia.
I do not like that this story is so negative... talking the whole way through about all the ornery things the dino does.... but then shows his love with a smile. Not really our style. I exclusively use it for my 2 year old (who can't read) and change all the words in the story to be positive . The first line in the book is "You woke in the morning in such a bad mood"... I replace it with "You woke up this morning in such a good mood".... I just tell it more positively for my 2 year old to hear.
Bought this for Christmas, we have all of the "how do dinosaur" books and I was so excited to read this one to our girls. Its ok, definatly not the same feel as the other ones. Didn't seem to flow as well, and made it seem like the "dinosaur" is always very very bad. I don't know that I would purchase it again if I had the chance.
Gah! My son and I love reading these books and this one is no exception! The story goes through different parts of a "dinosaur's" (aka your child) day and the things that they did that upset their parents. And after each thing it tells something sweet that the "dinosaur" did that made its parents happy and showed love.This book is so sweet and always brings a smile to my face. My son, who doesn't quite get the symbolism, loves the dinosaurs and that each picture tells you what type of dinosaur it is. I guess there is something in it for both of us!
My two year old twin daughters love this book and so do I. They love the dinosaur pictures and I like the very relatable story. The dinosaurs can be very naughty but also very sweet and their parents love them no matter what. My favorite picture is the Dad on the playground after the dinosaur slaps his hand. The author nailed the father's expression. I know I often wear that same look on my face. It makes me giggle every time I read it.
Really excellent artwork in here. It's a very cute book with an interesting "story" that didn't really resonate with our son until he got into his terrible twos. Which tells you where these dinosaurs are supposed to be in their stage in life.
