Basically you hear a sound effect then a man's voice repeats a word twice in a bored, droning, nasally tone. A voice like HAL from 2001 A Space Odyssey. They make it look so "fun" on the cover, with all the kids. So, where are the kids?The concept of the sound effects wasn't bad -- but, couldn't they use some children's voices, mix the words into some stories, anything? I don't see how this could be considered "immersion." Immersion implies being surrounded by natural language in a normal context!If you think your kids might like a list concept like this, I would try it from your library first, to make sure they are not too bored.
Our boys are now 16 and 12 but this was their favorite French CD when they were younger. This morning, as they were reading nearby, I played part of the CD and they immediately said how much they used to enjoy it.The CD has many sound effects presented in 27 categories. First the sound is heard, followed by the word spoken twice in French only. The book does not look like an activity book to me but a visual dictionary which includes each of the words heard on the CD and a picture above it. All the words are written in French without an English translation.This is definitely a simple, fun, and effective way to build a child's French vocabulary and teach him/her the sounds that are part of the French language. It is great for listening in the car or during playtime.L.Q.
My children really enjoyed this CD/Book. They liked the animal sounds; however, the pace of the CD went a little to fast for them, as they are a little young. But, it is a nice addition to the Flip Flop French workbook which is more their speed.
I have struggled hard to find good French language CDs for my 2-yr-old. I speak French with her on a daily basis, so the CDs that have more English than French tend to be uninteresting at best, and painful at worst. For example, if you're going to listen to a CD dozens of times, how often do you want to hear instructions about how to use the CD? Ugh. I can tell that this CD is a winner, because my daughter puts it on frequently, and I enjoy listening to it, as well.It would be awesome if this CD included a sentence that actually used each French word that's introduced, rather than just having the vocabulary words stand alone. But besides that critique, this is one of the most fun, entertaining, and effective CDs we have yet found. I also bought it for my nieces, ages 7 and 9, and they really like it, too, so it doesn't feel like a "toddler" learning tool.
