I have used this book this year for my Spanish 1 class. To say the least, it is extremely basic. In other words, it is not for the person who wants to learn a lot of Spanish fast. For a classroom pace, it is very slow, but at least it is interesting with the Telehistoria (a story line throughout the book used to catch the students' interest). Also, Avancemos has quite a few mistakes throughout the book. For example: Dónde es... should be Dónde está! Also, many instances, the student edition does not match up with the teacher edition. I do not recommend this book for an advanced class because of its slow pace.
I am a homeschooling mom, and I have used many different textbooks. In my opinion, this is one of the best textbooks out there. It is very easy to understand, and if you complete all (or most) of the exercises at the end of each chapter, you really understand the concepts of that chapter and are prepared to move on to the next. I definitely see my homeschooler struggling with the first few exercises, but by the time he is done with them, he completely understands.Also, there are 3 "Telehistorias" in each chapter. This means there are 3 scenes with dialogue that you can read and/or listen to on their website. The interesting thing about it is that the Telehistorias involve the same people in each chapter and it is a storyline that continues throughout the book. When you get to the Telehistorias, it is a nice reprieve from the learning (even though you are still learning by reading them) and while they may be a bit corny, we always enjoy them.
We used this book at a small school for Spanish I. The students loved it. We used the exercises in the book for practice speaking and the Cuaderno exercises for written work. (There are also exercises that can printed out if you buy the CD version of the book at Holt/McDougal.) The website at w[...] has short grammar cartoons that the students really enjoyed. We had looked at different Spanish programs for a long time before finding this one. It was perfect for our group of students.
I starting using this book in high school and even five years later, I still remember the material. When I was studying it in depth, the material stuck. There are relevant exercises, conversation scenarios and an orderly list of verbs and terms at the end of each lesson. It also has free access to online resources and flash cards to assist with learning. It is definitely one of the best Spanish textbooks I've ever used. This book really simplifies everything and breaks it down making learning easier.
Item was in the exact condition as described. I love the fact that I was literally able to save a hundred and ten dollars from the price of a new book. The process of ordering and receiving was super straightforward.ABOUT THE BOOK: this is a comprehensive textbook that has all one needs to master more than just the basics in the classroom. My school district has been using it for years, and results have been positive. It is almost a self-teach book, and the accompanying student book is very effective for reviewing each facet of the lesson. I highly recommend it!
I used Avancemos Level 1 to increase my Spanish speech and reading fluency. It was helpful on both counts. Because, I know a bit of Spanish, I was able to breeze though the text book with ease. This really was encouraging, plus learning a few new phrases along the way. I really enjoyed the format, the tele-historias and the review practice after each chapter. I recommend it for beginning Spanish speakers who want to get a good feel for the language.
This book was purchased for my daughter, for her Spanish course, I need some refresher help myself, and feel I will probably use it myself. Book looks like good quality materials were used, and arrived in perfect condition; great job.
I got this for a 9th grader learning spanish, based on the good reviews here. Both she and i found it incredibly difficult to follow and half the lessons required you to listen to the cd. Annoying. Even at the beginning of the book, lesson instructions were written in spanish. Whaaa??? My disclaimer: i hated spanish in high school and 3 years of it was torture but i learned the basics. If i had this book i would have gone postal. Churros y chocolate was the book i used and it was miles better than this one. And im an attorney so i dont think im crazy or stupid.
