New Practical Chinese Reader is a new series of textbooks designed for native English speakers to learn Chinese. It consists of 70 lessons in six volumes, covering beginning to intermediate levels for three years of instruction. It has been compiled under the guidance of the new the HSK Guideline and in consultation with NOTCFL Syllabus. I've been learning a lot. For the most part, the workbook is helpful and easy to use. In an effort to only use basic vocabulary, however, they sometimes ask us to put together sentences that are technically grammatically correct, but aren't at all what actual Chinese people say in real life. Sometimes when I ask my Chinese friends for help, they shake their head and tell me, "Well, it's not *wrong*, but we don't actually talk like that."
The key provided for the exercises in the accompanying Workbook and the tests for Lessons 1-6 and 7-14 in the Instructor's Manual are helpful and therefore I consider good, especially to enable me to check my work. The CD that came with the instructor's manual only contain the Revision tests for Lessons 1-6 and 7-14.However, instructions (I assume for the teacher to help him/her to deliver the Textbook) are in Chinese. I personally think this should also be given in English, especially to help those students who want to learn Chinese on their own or do not have access to a native Chinese speaking teacher or a teacher whose main language is not Chinese. This, I find is the only disadvantage of the Instructor's Manual.
You have to be careful with the audio parts. It goes fast and as you are beginning to learn it is hard to pick out the section information from the plethora of Mandarin you have never herd. Other than that, it is great.
I just needed it for my Chinese class. My teacher is Chinese and pointed out one mistake so far but it's still a pretty good book. Better for intermediate students to be honest. But I've been taking Chinese for a few years now.
Good work book to use along with the companion text book. Helps you to practice what you learnt in the text through ample exercises,text questions, phoenetics and writing characters.
Book is well done but the cd only works on computer and can not be downloaded it used in other device. Essential for improving listening skills
Excellent, practical activities. Mostly for memorising characters though. A bit old-school as far as language education goes.
This is a great book for adults that begin learning the Chinese language. The books were in perfect condition and they arrived much faster than expected.
