I've been buying this puzzle calendar for a number of years now for my wife. They are good puzzles with enough "easy" clues to get you started and enough "tricky" ones to make them challenging. We are not at the Mensa level, but between my wife and I we can almost always finish each puzzle.
.If they ever stop making these I don't know what I'll do. I have gotten one of these every year for many years and really enjoy them. I started out buying them for myself but over the past few years my stepdaughter has gotten them for me as a birthday gift. They are difficult enough to be challenging but not so difficult that I get frustrated. I'm not a top notch crossword puzzler so these may be too easy for some, but they are just right for me.
great fun, challenging, but not overwhelming, not too easy, the goldilocks of puzzles- "Just Right"
I was looking for some quick entertainment for my morning coffee, and this looked like it fit the bill. However, I'm pretty good at crosswords, but I can't complete these in 10 minutes. They are good puzzles, but I guess I'm not Mensa-enough for them!
I gifted this to myself as a Christmas present and have been enjoying the daily challenge of the crossword puzzles. I have never been good at crosswords, but after practicing every day, I'm getting better. I manage to solve 4-5 puzzles a week at 100%, but I take as long as I need, sometimes putting the puzzle down for several hours and coming back to it. I hope to try timing myself sometime this summer to see how long it takes me to solve a puzzle. Right now, it's way more than 10 minutes.
The puzzles are too easy and predictable, while writing on the pad is too hard! There is no place to steady your hand while writing. Also, the print is too small. I tried to return it, but the postage would have cost more than the refund, so I tossed it.
I am not a member of Mensa, so I rarely, if ever, finish one of these puzzles in 10 minutes. But they are just the right speed for me, on the whole. They are challenging enough to keep me working but rarely so arcane that I throw the puzzle away before finishing. So they are exactly what I was looking for. There is a tie-in with a digital calendar but even though I dutifully signed up and did what I thought I was supposed to do, I never use the calendar. That's the only reason I didn't give this calendar/puzzle 5 stars.
Of all the crossword puzzle books I have used over the years, this is by far my favorite. Don't let the word "Mensa" scare you; some puzzles are difficult, but most are very workable.
