Some books spend thousands of words dancing around the point and boring young readers. "Ball" sticks to one word, the only word that matters to the adorably obsessed protagonist, and tells a delightful story. I purchased this book for my nieces, who will undoubtedly enjoy having a book they can read themselves, but I also recommend it for anyone who loves dogs and will immediately recognize the single-minded zeal of a doggy with a ball. Fantastic illustration, quick pacing and an overall simple presentation make this book a real find.
I am a public librarian and I made sure my library bought copies of this title! It's SO cute! It's perfect for not just animal lovers but for all readers! This would make an amazing story time, maybe with a special K9 guest to assist? Buy (or check out) a copy today, if you library doesn't own a copy, ask them to buy it! Great great book! PS-Sorry for all the exclamation points.
This book is so stinkin' cute! What a clever concept. I have three kids - 5, 3, and 1 - and all three of them enjoy this at their own levels. My eldest son thinks it's hilarious to use so many different inflexions with the same word and my three-year-old son is giggling the entire time, especially through the dog's dream sequence. My 1-year old daughter loves the pictures, as they are bright and colorful and ironically, she can say 'ball' pretty well now, for such a young child. This would be a great addition to any children's home library.
It's amazing how much of a story can be told with one word. What a creative children's book! The illustrations are so fun and are key to understanding the story. The story itself is a very realistic depiction of a dog's experience and probably to what's going on inside a dog's mind. To top it off, it's very funny, and my 3-year-old daughter cracks up every time we read it.
I loved what the pictures said! My kids, ages eleven down to two, kept looking at it over and over again. It made my man smile, because he is a dog person, and it was a sweet bonding book to look at and read together. My two year old can point out the word ball everywhere we go.
My two year old is obsessed with balls of any type, and loves dogs, so it was a given he'd love this book. He says "ball" in different tones of voice/with different emotions as we read it. We often add other narrative (particularly around what the dog might be thinking and feeling), and ask him what he sees in the pictures. I have no idea how many times we've read this book together, but it has to be well into the 100s, and each time he grins and laughs. It's also one of those books that toddlers love that's also amusing and engaging to adults.
My 3.5 year old LOVES this book. We have a dog who loves his ball almost this much and the story made us laugh and laugh. Fantastic illustration and story. I have already recommended it to a teacher for her 1st grade class room.
This is such a cute book, I just had to buy it for my husband. Will make a nice coffee table book. Bought it to be funny and cute. Made it a gift from Santa to my husband and our American Eskimo, Lily. Wrote on the card that he could read this to Lily as a bedtime story. It is really and adorable book.
