When I was a kid, my dad read to me every night. Dad was the king of the benign indulgence - he could make working out a prime factorization, or adding up the cost of everything in the grocery cart sound like an amazing treat. He was also the world's softest touch about "one more chapter?" There were nights I didn't even have to ask. He'd flip to the next page without any prompting, announcing "That's a terrible place to stop."He is lucky I didn't have this book. We'd have been up all night.Harriet Hamsterbone is completely, unstoppably, indubitably awesome. Whether she's telling you what fraction beat you are at checkers, or rescuing a helpless dragon, Harriet is the kind of hamster you want to hang out with. Nothing ever quite happens as expected, and all of it is wonderful. The publisher says this is for kids in grades 3-7. I don't know what they're thinking there. It is never too early to introduce your children to characters who think fractions are cool.
I am a grownup, at least in theory, and I could not stop giggling while reading this. I had to exercise SO MUCH WILLPOWER to not constantly quote this book over Twitter while reading it. I can't wait until my niece is a couple of years older so that I can buy it for her.The book is almost a Muppet Show version of sleeping beauty. The protagonist is far stronger and smarter (and furrier) than the usual insipid princess with nice little side references to at least one other fairy tale. And like the muppet show, while it's theoretically for kids, it's full of humor for the adults keeping their reading children company. If you/your kid enjoyed the adventures of Danny Dragonsbreath, you'll definitely like this. There's some clear parallels in the main characters, but it's different enough to not feel like a photocopy.
A delightful read by the wonderful author of the Dragonbreath series. Harriet is not your usual princess. Cursed at birth by an evil fairy to prick her paw on a hamster wheel on her twelfth birthday and fall asleep for 100 years, Harriet concludes her curse protects her from harm (because how can she prick her paw on schedule if she gets killed ahead of time?) and sets out on adventures of daring-do as a knight. She rescues princesses from dragons and dragons from princesses and rides about on her brave and trusty battle quail. Eventually her curse and the wicked rat fairy catch up to her with unexpected consequences all around. This is the perfect book for girls who don't fit the usual mold and boys too who like wild adventures. I'm looking forward to reading more about Harriet in the future.
A wonderful re-imagining of the sleeping beauty tale, although this time the princess is not passively asleep for all the adventuring part. Nope, she takes care of the curse herself aided by her battle quail Mumfrey. I now want my own battle quail.
I initially bought this (along with the second in the series) as a gift for 9-year old granddaughter. After reading a few pages, I sent her $20 instead and kept the book(s)!! Terrific story telling and humor that only adults will get! I will probably go ahead and give my granddaughter copies for Christmas anyway ...
Today I read Hamster Princess: Harriet the Invincible by Ursula Vernon and it was laugh-out-loud, pound-the-mattress-with-a-fist funny.Like Terry Pratchett but with more feminist content (I'm not saying Pratchett had no feminist content, just that this had more.)Plus, it had cute funny cartoon illustrations embedded in it with the snarkiest imaginable expressions. Will definitely buy more books by her.
My kids and I just love this book! I read it aloud, then my 2nd grader re-read it. It's been a great transition book for her (thicker, fewer colors and pictures, longer paragraphs and pages) yet fun to read.
My 9 year old daughter loves hamsters, so I took a chance and ordered this for her to encourage her to read. She LOVED the book and read it from cover to cover in only a few hours. She is now asking if there are any more books. She loaned the book to her best friend who also loved it and now other little girls in her fourth grade class are also asking to borrow the book.
