Caldecott Honor winner David Ezra Stein has fans at his command with this comical dog’s-eye view of having a best friend. Many dogs have human owners. Not this dog. He fetches his own slippers, curls up at his own feet, and gives himself a good scratch. But there is one spot, in the middle of his back, that he just can’t reach. So one day, he lets a human scratch it. And the poor little fella follows him home. What can the dog do but get a leash to lead the guy around with? Dog lovers of all ages will revel in the humorous role-reversal as this dog teaches his human all the skills he needs to be a faithful companion.

This little bulldog is so completely on his own he doesn’t even have a name. He doesn’t like to be told what to do. He can throw his own sticks and lick his own face. Being his own dog seems to be working out quite well for him until one day he has an itch he can’t scratch. So he lets a guy scratch his back. Of course the guy follows him home, which by the way is not too shabby. What follows is a fun play on role reversal as the dog trains the guy to do the things he likes to do. Along the way he even learns to put up with the guy’s annoying habits. Stein’s lively ink and watercolor illustrations show the high energy and emotions of one independent little dog with a big heart. “I’m My Own Dog” is definitely a keeper.

So, while this book isn't phenomenal enough that I'm going to remember it for recommendations (pretty much only 5-star books get remembered, for me), it was an enjoyable book, and would probably be a nice fit for any dog-loving family. This book inverts the human-dog relationship a bit, with the dog letting a friendly human follow him home, and purchasing a leash so he can lead the human around places. It's a pretty cute image, and should get a laugh out of kids. The artwork reminds me of the style of Disney short cartoons from the 70s and 80s, crossed with a sophisticated child's crayon drawings. It works pretty well, though, so no complaints on that front.Overall, it's good and goes quick. Suitable for a library checkout, though I'm unsure if you'd want to bother with purchasing.

Cute idea of reversing the pet/owner relationship although this would make more sense with cats probably. Still, this is a fun picture book that children and adults will enjoy. Illustrations will provoke a few belly laughs too. Good buy for any dog owner!Book provided by publisher.

I chose this book based on a Family Fun (Disney magazine) recommendation. It was a good read for my students. I teach art K-2 at a public school with a bulldog mascot so this was perfect for my students to draw! And they loved it. Their bulldog drawings were great and they benefited from some language arts in the process. The storyline is intriguing as the dog has a human follow him home he makes some of the same comments about the human that a human would make about a pet, i.e. you have to clean up after them and they are always yapping. Cute story, great illustrations!

"I'm my own dog. Nobody owns me. I own myself."This adorable picture book is from the perspective of an independent dog who grows attached to a human and keeps him as a pet. Kids will find the role reversal funny and the illustrations are delightfully cartoonish and expressive.I think was really makes this book 'work' is that David Ezra Stein doesn't poke fun of the dog by painting it as a deluded character who cutely imagines himself in charge. The dog actually gets to be the narrator/main character, which results in a refreshing and endearing play on the pet-owner relationship story.

A cute story that begs the questions, are dogs man’s best friends, or is it actually the other way around?! The star of this book is his own dog. He has no owner, he runs his own life and takes care of himself. Then one day he gets a little help with an itch he can’t scratch. The man begins to “follow him” around on the tail end of the leash, sit with him on a bench, and play fetch with him at the park. Woof, what a good boy that lonely man is! This book is absolutely hilarious as it is told from a dog’s perspective, a dog who speaks of the man just as man would his dog. The illustrations by Caldecott-winning author David Ezra Stein are the perfect mix of ink and watercolor. The unfinished, sketch-like, purposefully rough look hits every mark of illustration perfection. Read more at www.diapers-and-daydreams.com !

I'm My Own Dog is an adorable story about a dog who seemed quite content being "his own dog" and not needing anyone in his life. One day all that changes when he has an itch that is driving him crazy and that he cannot reach no matter how hard he tries. He let's a human scratch his back for him and it felt good. Soon the human followed him home and the dog began to show the human all the things he liked to do alone. Before long each has a new best friend. My granddaughter loved this book and so did I. It's one of those books that will be read over and over again. It's a keeper. The drawings are so cute and colorful, the typeface is fun and bold, with just the right amount of words on each page. Be sure to add this one to your bookshelves; a perfect preschool choice.

David Ezra Stein has written a very amusing story from a dog's point of view from being independent to finding an owner. The interesting part is how the author weaves the thoughts of the dog. For example the dog wants to make sure his owner understands how the human needs to act now that the human owns a dog. It will make you wonder if our pets are thinking similar thoughts . It is a humorous story I know you and your child will enjoy.*I received this for review - all opinions are my own*
