The "Harry" series by Zion and Graham remain monumental fixed images in the memories of my youth. I teach rhetoric in a Japanese university and stumbled upon these books in the children's reading section of our school's library. My seven-year-old daughter had fished "Harry by the Sea" out of one of the shelves and brought it to me. What a stroke of serendipity! In seeing the cover, I was immediately taken back to my youth. Wow! The story of Harry invited me so often to its pages that I can still remember all of the details. These books represent a brilliant blend of narrative and illustration. Graham's ability to capture the level of expression on the faces of the characters in pastels is amazing. Zion's introduction to simple, compound and complex sentences is a perfect primer for young readers. In their ability to arrest a young reader's attention, these works are easily on the level of Seuss's.
This book instantly became a bedtime favorite with each of my kids (boy and girl). Harry is adorable, and just enough mischief and adventure (and smelly seaweed!) to keep the little one's attention, and to keep young readers turning the pages. You'll love it too.
My daughter loves the Harry books and this one is her favorite right now. She loves the story of Harry turning into a sea monster and scaring all the people on the beach. She asks for it at bedtime every night. *Only negative note: She has picked up use of the phrase "the fat lady" based on one of the character descriptions.
This was my favorite book as a child. Great story and fun pictures.
We really liked the book "Harry the Dirty Dog" in our house, so we bought this and "Harry and the Lady Next Door" for my son's birthday. The part that irks me as a parent is when Harry is "walking in the shadow the fat lady made." I don't like reading statements so judgemental to my 2 and 4 year olds. Too bad, because the rest of the book is actually ok.
I have had this book since 1969 when I was 6 years old. It is a treasured part of my childhood! It tells the story of a lovable dog Harry and his family spending an eventful day at the beach. Children and adults alike will love this cuddly tale.
Another cute Harry book. Again, the illustrations are not particularly colorful, but my little one loves being read to and isn't too picky about illustrations at this point. When he is beginning to read, I think these books will really come in handy, as they seem perfect for young readers.
Wonderful book. We love all the Harry the Dog stories and am so happy to have this in our collection. It's a paperback version, so little ones could fold, spindle, or mutilate, but it's a great read with fun illustrations. The kids, and the grandkids love it.
