This book is pretty good. I added it to our History and Social Studies Curriculum. It is a great supplement and has fun facts and lots of games to make learning about History fun! Believe it or not, it is one of my grandsons favorite books for trips, my grandson has medical issues and we live in a small town, so we have to drive 3 hours one way to the doctor each week. I keep this book in the car and he works it as we travel. I have ordered several of these "Complete Book Of" books and I love that they are easy to teach from and the kids learn so much and love working the books! These are all pure facts on the History of the United States. This book has an answer key in the back, so no need to purchase an additional teachers copy. This book could be used as supplemental work or as a a basic curriculum.
It's missing President Obama. I think one or two crossword puzzles had some technical errors. Other than that, it's a wonderful tool to make learning American history fun and memorable. We are all done with the American History and American Presidents Units. We are now in the American States. Each unit concludes with games you can easily play with your children. With each lesson, we would find a relevant video on YouTube or DVD (a 5-10 min segment) to help it sink in. Our 3rd grader learned a lot. Disney's U.S. presidents videos were a perfect compliment for the Presidents Unit.Regarding President Obama, you can come up with something on your own from a wide variety of sources.It's a wonderful book that is easy to use. I'm so glad we bought it and used it over the years with 3 children.
This book contains nice supplemental activities for the third to sxith grade range. Because it was published in 2002 and does not include President Obama, the book is considered so outdated that many copies are available via for only a penny (plus shipping). Similarly, I bought my copy for $2 off the clearance rack at Half Price Books, making it a bargain purchase.The book is definitely worth its current (low) price because one can bring it up to date easily by checking out a youth biography on Pres. Obama from the library and pairing that it with a word search or crossword about Pres. Obama from an online source. The fact that the book ends with President George W. Bush does not in any way invalidate all of the rest of the material in the book!
I bought this book for my 8 yr old because he loves history, geography, & anything related. He's already done the first 8 pages. He loves it and he's learning so much at the same time.
The book is good for what I bought it for. My best friends daughter is Korean-American and lives in Korea. She has yet to be to the states. In school she needs a better grasp of America then she can get from her teachers. So, to help her and make her first trip memorable this book will come in handy. It's easy to read, has games, and is fun. Good for any child 9 or younger, (even in the states), or for anyone wanting to "pre-test" for their citizen test.
