This book is jam-packed with activities and games to keep children occupied. The layout starts with the Pacific Coast and the Northern Rocky Mountains and travels through the Southwest, Central states, the South, the Middle Atlantic, and ends in the Northeast. The factoids of US states and their cities in this book allow everyone to have some fun.I used this in my classroom with first graders while reviewing US geography, and it was a favorite among students of all levels. The riddles are fun (what has a bed, but never sleeps?), the graphics are cool and colorful (page 56 and 57 with Cape Kennedy and St. Augustine), and the tidbits of knowledge are plentiful.
I buy books like this all the time to entertain my kids in the car or in resteraunts. These Rand McNally books are always their first choice. I think the age is off though; my five year old can do this only with older siblings help and my 13 year old still enjoys the activities.
I purchased this as a going away gift for a 2nd grader, who enjoys reading about facts. The first page has a kid-friendly map of the U.S. showing the capitals, interstates, and some national parks. Some of the games include the following: word search, crossword puzzles, labeling (i.e., parts of a volcano), backseat bingo, mazes, connect-the-dots, and there's even a code to crack on one page. Answers are listed in the back. I am sure the 2nd grader will have fun figuring the puzzles out and learning new things. I recommend for approximately 2nd grade and up.
This book was a fun way for my daughter to keep busy by learning about different locations across the county. She enjoyed doing activities that were related to the places we were heading or had been before. Educational but fun.
