This is by far the best book I have ever come across about the night of April 15, 1912 when the Titanic sank. This book is filled with 882 ½ facts (because the ship was 882 ½ ft. long) about the people, the ship, crew, heartwarming stories of how mothers pleaded for their sons to be allowed into life boats, how lovers said goodbye to each other, how people were refused into life boats, and how others never made it out of the ship. There are detailed names, dates, info about the aftermath, a "whatever happened to..." page with facts about survivors, as well as great info about the discovery of the ship, exploration of the wreckage, facts about the movie directed by James Cameron, and a great glossary at the back of the book to learn about different words associated with the ship. What I love most about this book is the heartfelt facts about the people who were on the ship, and what happened to them. If you have ever wanted to learn about The Titanic, this is THE book to buy. An Outstanding tribute to the souls loved and lost. Deserves 10 Stars.
Bought this book through book club at daughters school. It is VERY informative. I thought I was up on a lot about Titanic, but this really taught me a lot more. Very good for any student or historian.
Brilliant reference book. If you ever had wondering questions about the Titanic, this is your book. Summary: This book has answers to almost all of your questions about the ship and the sinking, etc. Wonderful facts. Reaction: Though this book is thin, it has plenty of little bits that can keep you interested 100 years later. Every Titanic fanatic will find a new fact on the ship and the people involved with it. Wonderful. A MUST BUY!!!
For those who love learning new details about the mystery/story of the Titanic, this is the book for you. I learned lots of things that I've never heard or read anywhere else. It was well worth the money and a great learning tool for people that love the story of Titanic.
My daughter carried this book around for a week. She loved learning all that she could about the Titanic. This is a very informational book with some areas of "why would anyone write that down?". Overall good.
Last year, we took our 6-year-old to the Titanic Museum in TN. When the guides learned that he is a big Titanic buff, some of them quizzed him on Titanic facts. He ALWAYS knew the right answer, thanks to this book! One of the guides told me that if I were to get one book about the Titanic, it should be this one. I told him, "We already have it -- how do you think my boy knows all these answers?"What's great about this book, for adults and children alike, is that it's well-researched, doesn't repeat old myths, and has a very easy-to-approach format. Kids can get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of background, history, and narrative in the Titanic story. This book breaks the story down into interesting, accurate, bite-sized facts that allow kids to put the pieces of the story in place by themselves. Besides, kids love to show off their knowledge of trivia tidbits!Of all the many Titanic books my boy has, he returns to this one again and again. Although now, thanks to other Titanic books, he will correct the title -- the Titanic has been variously cited as 882.75 and 882.9 feet long. I told him that, with all that riveted steel, it certainly expanded and contracted by an inch or two depending on temperature inside and outside the hull, and whether it was in dry dock or in the water. That seems to satisfy him that it's not quite wrong to say it was 882-1/2 feet long.Highly, highly recommended for any young -- or even not-so-young -- Titanic aficionado.
This was a very informative read to satisfy even the most curios about the tragedy of the Titanic. The is more like a thick, quality magazine than a book, but I guess that depends on one's definition of a book. I personally was expecting a smaller in dimension, but thicker book. But that's no big deal as it's what inside that counts. And inside this book is a whole bunch of common and not-so-common questions about everything relating to the Titanic. It reads in chronological order, from the building of the Titanic to the re-discovery of its remains to the movie. There are plenty of questions that I would have never thought to ask and also lots and lots of actual photos of the events in question. The only thing I was only a TAD disappointed with (hence the subtraction of one star) were the structure of the some of the questions. In many instances, one question is dissected into multiple questions, so in a sense it's a little like cheating. But I suppose it was necessary to come up with 882 questions! But what I mean is that reading a handful of questions is like reading something like this:"Why did the dog bark at the cat?" Because the cat startled him."Why did the cat startle the dog?" Because he was wandering the street."Why was the cat on the street?" Because he ran off from home."Why did he run off from home?" Because he was bored. And so on and so forth. Fortunately, this wasn't the book in entirety and was just peppered here and there. And of course even those sorts of examples are still informative, but still. I didn't really like the feeling of lingering on the same question. Other than that, this is a great book and soooooooo intersting. Highly recommended.
