As a mother of twin preschoolers who is about to jump into the world of homeschooling, I am so excited to have found this book! I am passionate about inquiry-based learning, which means I will be focusing on helping my children formulate and test their own hypotheses rather than drilling academic facts. There are very few resources out there that truly support this type of learning, and I applaud Asia for seeing the need for this type of book and filling it so superbly! This book will serve as our science "curriculum" this year, and I'm looking forward to diving in with my curious kiddos ;)
The Curious Kid's Science Book has quickly become one of my favorite resources out there! It's SO hard to find quality science activities for kids, especially geared towards preschoolers, kindergarteners, and early elementary-aged students, but this book has you covered! I love how, unlike other science books out there, it actually encourages children to make predictions, take an active role in the experiment itself, and evaluate the results of their experiment. This is definitely a must-own book for anyone that works with children or wants to encourage a natural curiosity and a love of learning in their own children! I wish I could give it 10 stars!
The book was very eye catching and the directions were easy to follow. I'm a teacher and my students quickly picked the book up and spent a long time leafing through it. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because the majority of the "science" projects don't explain the science behind them. If my students are doing an experiment they need to know why they are doing them, what they are looking for/ monitoring, etc. I had to spend too much time coming up with these rationales on my own.
I was sent a pre-release copy of this book to review, and I am impressed! I own Asia Citro's previous book, "150+ Screen-Free Activities for Kids", which is excellent. I like this book even more! The activities are accessible to young children, use everyday household supplies (with a few exceptions, but there is a resource at the end of the book showing where to buy), and the experiments are designed to get kids curious about science. Experiments are set up to get kids thinking like proper scientists, asking what their hypothesis (guess) is as to what will happen and providing prompts as to what data they should be gathering. Extension activities are offered for many of the activities, and real-life applications are added to others. The photos are stunning. This is a must-have book for parents and educators looking to help children develop an interest in science.
As a homeschooling mom of four I have quite the collection of science books. I was pleasantly surprised to find this book full of new ideas and fresh takes on encouraging scientific exploration in kids. My boys love all the ideas and had a hard time deciding which activities to do first! I love the colorful photos and detailed descriptions, and I appreciate the appendix listing where to find all the necessary materials for each project.
I'm in love with this book. As a mom and teacher who loved science experiments I was thrilled to see that the book goes deeper than just the supplies you need. It is packed full of simple ways to encourage observation, critical thinking and creativity in kids--it's like a manual for developing problem solving skills in children! When it came in the mail my kids spent over 30 minutes pouring over it and trying to decide which activity to try first!
It is hard to write a science book that would scale well from early preschool to late elementary school, but Asia Citro has masterfully done just that. My 8 year old daughter is in love with this book, and she certainly has her fair share of other science books to choose from. What I really appreciated about the approach is that there are no direct answers and explanations in the book. In other words, kids cannot just read about an experiment instead of really experiencing it and finding the answers on their own. This moves them from being simply consumers of science facts to active participants in scientific inquiry. Another big plus point for age modification suggestions in the book.
I love the amazing science ideas in this book! So many activities to choose from! I have an 8-year old, and he's already made a list of which activities to try. I'm also a pre-k teacher, and I know my students will love these ideas!
