Rosita Fernandez, born in Mexico and the ninth of 16 children, was adapting to a new home north of the Rio Grande in San Antonio, Texas. She found she had a talent in singing, and was determined to develop it. At first she taveled with her musician uncles to sing before Spanish-speaking audiences. Then she set out on her own in a singing career that would include television shows and movies. For many years Rosita also starred in summer night performances in the San Antonio River Walk's open-air theater. When she retired, the city she charmed named the bridge to the theater's stage Rosita's Bridge. At the naming ceremony Rosita's granddaughter, Carla Maria, crossed the bridge to present her grandmother with roses. In this true story, for ages 8 and up, Carla Maria finds out why Rosita's Bridge is called not just a bridge across a river, but a bridge between cultures. Carla Maria also discovers the appeal of San Antonio's River Walk, which makes the setting of this story known around the world.
