What a find! I knew of Pete Seeger, but had no idea (until reading "Sing It") of the impact that he had on the world, and more interestingly, how he used music as a vehicle for change. The way the author tells the story of Pete's life almost made me feel like I knew him and was accompanying him through his life journey. Although written for kids, this book captured me as an adult and reminded me that each of us has the ability to make positive change that benefits us all. I can imagine that kids reading it might feel empowered to themselves work to make the world a better place. This book would be great for holiday presents... definitely making my shopping list this year for family and friends. I absolutely loved it.
What a delightful book. You need not be a kid to enjoy this well-written and entertaining book about an incredible man who is such an important part of our history. Danziger's own creative and playful voice comes through loud and clear, but Pete's voice is the main event. My suggestion for SING IT: READ IT!
This is a lovely, engaging, thoughtfully-written biography of Pete Seeger for young readers. There's so much to learn from the Seeger story -- a lot about music, of course, but also about kindness, activism, community, the importance of principles, and the power of humility. Meryl Danziger presents it all with wit and grace, beginning a conversation which should continue long after the book has been read and reread.
Having had the privilege to know and work with Pete, it feels like Meryl took on this biography as a labor of love. It certainly embodies Pete’s irrepressible and infectious spirit. As an adult and ardent fan, I still learned a great deal more about him, and history in general. It’s a delightful read, and I can’t see how anyone, regardless of their politics, could read this book and not admire what a genuine American hero Pete was.
I loved this book! It was full of sometimes surprising and always interesting history and details, but what I most enjoyed was the book's many powerful and important messages for children, including the importance of community, the value of ALL voices, the ability of all of us to make a difference. And -- the thinking that a little creativity and courage can create real wealth in life. Long live Pete!
