I feel in love with this book the moment I saw the cover. The prose are written in English and Spanish. A perfect combination since it opens the book up to various populations.
At last! A bilingual picture book that is a biography of a strong family, with a very strong mother who raised another wise Latina woman, our new Supreme Court Justice. I expect this to become almost as frequently read in my 3rd grade bilingual class as La LLorona, the classic folktale.
I think I learned more about Sonia Sotomayor in this book than I did in reading about her during the nomination process for the Superme Court. Mr. Winter tells me about the person. That is much more interesting than much of the nonsense people said about her after her nomination.
Love that she shared her story in such a lovely manner. My 10 year old daughter had re-read this book about 20 times. She doesn't come from such a challenging background but I hope it still Inspires her to reach for big things. Great illustrations.
Justice of the Supreme Court Sonia Sotomayor was featured in a recent 60 Minutes segment, visiting her old neighborhood in The Bronx, New York, where people called greetings to her from second-story apartment windows in Spanish and she warmly replied. She wasn't born to money or privilege--far from it--and she didn't expect her diabetes to let her live this long; but she studied hard, worked hard, and didn't let anything stop her. It's an inspiring story. By the way, I bought the book as a gift for a 13-year-old girl, but it's also been helpful to me in refreshing the Spanish I learned in school.
Bought this for a four (soon to be five) year old and was thrilled once we had a chance to read it. It has the virtues of being about a woman who worked hard, lived in poverty, dealt with the pressure of living in two different cultures and just kept succeeding, but without ever losing her way and while having so much love in her life. And, most importantly for kids, it provides a lot of detail about what she was like as a child, making the concepts relatable. We've read it several times and each time I am asked different questions so I know she is thinking about all the different themes in the book. Full disclosure, certain parts are tough to read to a four year old, e.g., about poverty, about being different because of your wealth or skin color, about being a Supreme Court nominee and still feeling that people are judging you in part based on your family's background. But the book actually presents these in a very manageable way and if you want to skip them, you can. You'll lose some of the strength of the story but depending on the age of the children and how well you've prepared for talking about these issues, it might be the right thing to do at the time (I personally would want to prepare ahead of time, which is why i wanted to share this).Fantastic book, highly recommended.
This book teaches the history to Sonia. It was wrote in English & Spanish. I recommend this book, because it help the person believes that all is possible if you work hard. I will expect that you enjoy it.
This is a great and inspiring story for many minority children and it proves that with a little hard work and dedication dreams can come true. I would like to recommend this book to my daughter Ricki who is my little Sonia and to all the underprivileged children who dream big.
