I thought maybe this might be a little juvenile for my 10 year old son, but it was not. Plenty of technical terms and advanced vocabulary and he loved it. Works for a child who is 5, as well, because the pictures are captivating.

Although this book mostly glorifies the raping of the Spanish treasure ship Atocha by underwater grave robber Mel Fisher who destroyed a coral reef to get at the Atocha's treasures and who then committed the ultimate sin of archaeology by selling these priceless historical artifacts and treasures from this underwater grave that were originally paid for with the blood of MILLIONS of Central and South American Natives and was on its way to feed the satanically barbaric bloodlust of the Spanish Inquisition - Gibbons however does a good job demonstrating different ways of diving on underwater shipwrecks. She does mention underwater explorer Barry Clifford's discovery and recovery of the Whydah Galley (the world's only fully authenticated pirate shipwreck - which is 100% protected, preserved and UNSOLD by Clifford), and I dare say she would have done better to devote the book to that.

Sunken Treasure is a great picture book for elementary students. It tells of the discovery of the Spanish treasure galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha. Detailed illustrations and text show how the divers found the wreck, salvage the treasure, and catalog it. Bonus pages teach about other wrecks. The book's text gives the exact right amount of detail--enough to really teach, not so much that it bores. Kids will love this!

Great book about shipwrecks, I remember when this was on reading rainbow back in the 90s. And the history of the ships in this book.
