I suggest .com to reconsider their age rating for this book. Toddler to 3 years might be more approriate. This being said however, my toddler boy loves this book. He goes wild over the bright colors and big bright pictures. The great thing is that the book introduces one new boat per page while keeping the previous boat displayed in the background. This way the child is able to see what happens to the other boat while being introduced to a new one. The Text is easy and plain "here comes a rowing boat" style, leaving plenty of room to create ones own stories.I recommend this book for small children.
"Boats," by Byron Barton, is a good book for beginning readers. Like others by this author, the book combines simple text with illustrations in Barton's trademark style: bright, solid colors and simplified, almost iconic figures.Barton depicts a rowboat, sailboat, fire department boat, ferry, cruise ship, and other vessels. The boats are actually shown in action. A nice touch is that the passengers and crew are people of different colors and ethnic appearances. Sample text: "There goes a fishing boat out to sea." A colorful and educational book.
I am a big fan of Byron Barton's books. The simple text and bold, colorful illustrations are very appealing. I really like Planes- this one is pretty good but not as cohesive. It introduces the reader to several boats in the beginning and then seems to take off for many pages on just a cruise ship. At least half the book is about the cruise ship (docking, loading supplies, people boarding, saying bon voyage, etc). I think that kind of loses focus from the more general theme of "boats." Nonetheless, this book is nice and I will be reading it to my daughter!
i first bought this for my now 13 year old son when he was a year old. he loved all of byron barton's books (machines at work, trucks, planes...) the images are simple but eye catching and the words are somehow poetic to a young child. he memorized and could recite the words to machines at work and trucks at 18 months. we thought we had a child prodigy on our hands! (: byron barton books are what i give to all little ones now, boy or girl.
We love Byron Barton board books. My 22 month old son especially loves the Planes book and the Trains book. He is now staerting to like this Boats book and is understanding all the different types of boats.
My toddler son has most of the Byron Barton board books (Boats, Trains, Trucks, My Car, Planes). He likes to read them before bedtime so much that he almost has them memorized. They're a very simple read, but that isn't a bad thing.
Our grandson is two. He still needs practice with paper books, but board books are safe in his hands. I coupled this with the Kid O Tug Boat and he can enjoy his boat in the bath and the book before or after.
I bought this for my 20-month old son at the same time I bought three other Byron Barton books ("My Car", "Trains", and "Machines at Work"). This is the least often requested of the four, but my son still enjoys it. In fact, these four books are his four favorite books. The book is typical Byron Barton...bright, colorful pictures and a basic, sensible story. The only reason I think my son doesn't enjoy it as much as the other books is that he has not had any exposure to boats outside of this book. Like I said, though, he still seems to really like it!
