Full disclosure: Shana Corey is a college friend of mine, but that's not what makes this book awesome. The illustrations are incredible and very unique. The story (which is true!) about an inventor who creates a pneumatic tunnel for a passenger train to help alleviate New York's traffic problems -- 40 years before the modern subway system was built -- is both interesting and entertaining. There's a kind of fun, gothic, steampunk feel to this book that I loved, and my sons (3 and 5) loved "The Secret Subway" because they love trains and inventions.
WOW! What an amazing book! An incredibly engaging nonfiction story about an inventor who secretly built a fan-powered subway in 1870. Just enough text to tell all the terrific details of the story without ever going overboard (an excellent author's note provides more information). As always, the illustrations of Red Nose Studio are jaw-droppingly captivating, and, particularly for this story, do much to complement the text. Highly, highly recommended for all ages when thinking about perseverance, engineering, imagination, and history. I predict this will win awards this year.
This is an exquisite non-fiction picture book. It may end up being one of my all time favorites, in fact. Exciting, fascinating text with remarkable, detailed artwork by Red Nose Studio that you have to see to believe. So much to explore and study, The Secret Subway demands to be read over and over.
Love this book. It is a gorgeous book and the story appeals to so many different ages. I bought it for my nieces (ages 5 and 7) and my 10 year old son liked it so much I am going to order another one for us.
Difficult to read on Kindle. Strong story and interesting otherwisePerhaps best to read on an iPad or bigger screen to get full effects of the beautiful artwork.
