Little did he know that a boatload of hungry sailors, coupled with his knack for creative problem-solving, would yield one of the world’s most prized and beloved pastries.        Lively and inventive cut-paper illustrations add a taste of whimsy to this sweet, fact-filled story that includes an extensive bibliography, author's note, and timeline.

What a fun topic! I’d never heard this story before, so the image on the cover had me scratching my head trying to figure out what a sea captain had to do with doughnuts. Answer: everything! This is a fascinating story of a young man who saw a problem and found a solution. The use of round shapes on the interior illustrations cleverly tied the doughnut theme to the sea theme, and the entire story is told and illustrated with wit and enthusiasm. THE HOLE STORY OF THE DOUGHNUT is an excellent biography for someone who made life better for the seamen of his time and made a lasting contribution to the fun part of our diet!

What an interesting book! Pat Miller and Vincent X. Kirsch really aim to satisfy your curiosity about why doughnuts have holes in this historical picture book biography. The story is written in a way that parents and teachers can have fun with kids sorting through fact vs. fiction ("legend"). Don't skip the back matter, either - the children found this info fascinating, especially about how Dunkin' Donuts stepped in to help with the missing gravestone. I'd recommend this for grades 1 and up (ages 6-10). The entire first and second grade class loved it, and it sparked further questions and investigations—which is the best kind of book, in my opinion!

With a catchy title, fun illustrations, and a little known story of the invention of the doughnut, this book is a tasty treat. Savor the twists and turns of Hanson Gregory's life, and learn how a round lid of a pepper can changed the course of history. The back matter is an added bonus, neatly arranged and infused with doughnut-colored pages. How clever!

How can we encourage young kids to love books? How can we help them to become great readers? And how can we engage them in learning about history? The answer lies in providing them with books like Pat Miller's The Hole Story of the Doughnut!I was instantly hooked from page one...the tale of a young boy, seeking his fortune and a better life. And how along the way, he invented a pastry delight that we still enjoy today. WOW! Kids are going to LOVE this book! The story is about a fascinating piece of history and the author deftly draws in both reader and listener. I couldn’t put it down! The illustrations are full of fun and very kid-friendly.It's a great read-aloud…the recommendation says for ages 6-9, but younger kids would love it also!Parents and teachers can use this story as a springboard for discussion about creativity and how people come up with new ideas. As a former educator, I highly recommend this book...it belongs on every school library shelf! And if you are looking to encourage your child to love history, embrace adventure, and use his or her creativity, this book belongs on your child's shelf also.

Who would have thought that the hole in the doughnut was invented? That too, by a little lad who was good at many other things on board a ship besides helping the chef make breakfast for the sailors. I love doughnuts and their holes, but I had never imagined a story connected to it. The book is presented in such an interesting way that it has forever changed my doughnut eating experience. For the rest of my life, I will never devour another doughnut, or its innocent spherical hole, without visualising this busy ingenious boy scooping out the insides of soft, lumpy dough and releasing them into the sloshing hot oil. This can be a great book to teach children about a simple problem-solving scenario. This book is a great way to show how to do research on anything you are curious about. There's often a lot to be found that's worth finding! I highly recommend this book to be kept in every doughnut shop in the country. All doughnut lovers will LOVE it!

I bought this book at an author event. The title caught my eye right away. So catchy! I knew it would appeal to kids. I had never heard the story of how doughnuts came to have holes in them, so learning about seafaring Hanson Crockett Gregory and his invention was a very interesting read. The illustrations are creatively done with circular cutouts to mimic a doughnut. The back matter was a special delectable treat as well. It was the icing on the cake ... uh ... doughnut. Discovering this book was like getting a hole-in one. It's a "hole" lot of fun.

This delectable book is a true story with a graphic novel illustration style. Pat Miller's text cleverly details the birth of the donut via the Captain's accidental discovery while sailing his ship. Reading it allows one to feast upon the illustrations, which includes every variety of donut imaginable, while learning of the historic significance of this man plus his lifelong contribution to American cuisine.

This is an engaging book that my children really enjoy being read. We discussed that this is a TRUE story, which they thought was cool. The Captain's tale is captivating and the history of his donut invention is inspiring. The illustrations are fun and very well crafted. An excellent addition to any home or professional library!
