“Woof” is Bowser’s own story and that of his adventure with Birdie, the girl who adopted him and for who he was a birthday present. Spencer Quinn’s novel in which Bowser narrates his story and the way in which the two solve a mystery is charming, but suspenseful enough to maintain young readers’ interest.Bowser is an unusually intelligent, very observant dog, but one Grammy fears will “…eat us out of house and home …” Her granddaughter Birdie is undeterred; she wants Bowser as her belated birthday present. Like any loving grandparent, Grammy gives in and Birdie gets her wished for dog. Upon returning to their home from the shelter where they adopted Bowser, Birdie and her Grammy discover that someone has stolen Black Jack from Grammy’s business establishment. Black Jack is a family heirloom, a black marlin caught by Grammy’s father after his return from World War II. The fish has been mounted and hung on the shop’s wall for as long as anyone can remember. When Black Jack disappeared, Snoozy, the clerk who was on duty at Gaux Family Fish and Bait, has been napping – but not for more than “thirty seconds”. As the story progresses, the mystery surrounding Black Jack deepens – there are more characters interested in the stuffed fish than one would expect. There are also more reasons for their interest than can easily be explained.Spunky, personable characters – both human and canine – make “Woof” a delightful book. Both children and adults will enjoy the first person narrative and Bowser’s perspective on humans and their activities. Birdie is a spunky girl; she is bright, inquisitive, and determined to recover Black Jack. She is a child everyone would like to have as a friend.
