I really like the other book in this series, "No More Bottles for Bunny". But this book is far less helpful in dealing with potty training than "Bottles for Bunny" is in dealing with bottle weaning. To summarize: Inspired by her friend Piggy's potty habits, Ducky decides one day that she doesn't want to wear diapers anymore. So she takes off her diaper and starts using the potty. And that's it. Oh, if only it were that easy for any child! There are no misgivings, no fears, no hesitation, no accidents, no back-and-forth between success and failure... It's cute, but it just doesn't accurately reflect the process of potty training. I'd recommend "A Potty for Me" by Karen Katz instead.
This book has been fantastic for my very stubborn three (almost four) year old who has not been able to figure out potty training. If you have a child like this, take heart, this book may help! When I potty trained my older two children, I had quick success. The rewards and the praise were all I needed to do. But I have this third little one who just wouldn't (couldn't?) do it. I have been told by strangers at the pool and at the park that I "just need to..." a dozen different things. But there are some kids who really have a block on this for one reason or another. We went from kids being motivated by one M&M to promising whole bags of candy and other treats to motivate this one. But she still can't get it. If you (and your child) are exhausted and discouraged and tired of everyone who catches a glimpse of your child's diaper offering you their two cents, I will first remind you of what a kind friend has pointed out to me "no one ever graduates from high school in a diaper." They'll get it eventually! But this book has helped us. My daughter loves this book and can already almost recite it after one week. It is great to remind her of when she is discouraged about trying. I remind her of Ducky and Piggy and how they had to sit for a while. Ducky notices in the book that her diaper is cold and wet. When a child is used to wearing a cold and wet diaper, she may need to be reminded that she could be more comfortable. I also noted the one review about how all the child had learned from the book was to rip off her diaper and kick it (which I can see wouldn't be very helpful). However, that part really helped my daughter. She has so much dread of going to sit on the potty, but the fact that she gets to rip off her diaper and kick it first makes it fun.I can see that this book might not work for all children, but that is why I shared my story. I think it is a godsend for when Karen Katz' book and all the typical methods just don't work.
We are currently in the process of potty training my son (2 year old) and I find this book very helpful. I started reading this book to him few months ago when he goes to sit on his little toilet at night, and it’s becoming a routine now that he would ask for the book when he goes to sit on the toilet. He likes many parts of the book and would say knock knock with me when we get to parts that ducky/piggy knocks on the door, and as we read the book, he would point at himself and says he’s sitting on the potty too! I like the little details they put in the book, like having the texture diaper on the front cover and the illustrations are super cute. Don’t expect the book do the potty training work for you, but it makes the idea of going potty fun for the little ones.
Update: This book is helping my daughter get rid of her diapers for good. I am currently reading the book to her every night and she is potty training now. We refer to this book a lot and she says no more diapers for me in the style of this book! :) I also used the other two books in the series about blankets and bottles and so far, big success with all! BIG Thank you! :) My daughter loves this book!
This is such a cute book. It was the first book that really got our grandson interested in actually paying attention to potty training. He knew how to hold it, he just didn't want to use the potty, but this book helped that along, Shipping was fast, book was in condition described and our grandson loved it.
I bought this book because the teachers of the MDO program my goes said that this is the book they use for teaching them to use the potty, but the moral of the story is one of them can never play because they are sitting on the toilet, so what good comes from that? If you poop in your diaper, you are free to play and do whatever you want, but being stuck in the toilet all your friends can play but you.I really don't like this idea
My son is a big fan of this book (he likes all things ducky). He's in the process of potty training and this book has become part of his nightly routine and hopefully within a few months he will be out of diapers.
We've done Elimination Communication with our baby since birth. She's now 13 months old. This is our favorite potty book because it doesn't make a big deal out of diaper use. Some babies wear diapers (Ducky), and perhaps some babies (Piggy) don't wear diapers. Some babies who wear diapers (or use diapers as a back-up for EC) can decide that they prefer using the potty over going in their diapers.We also use sign language with our baby, and there are several words in the book that we use signs for: duck, pig, diaper, potty, play/toys, books, and knock (on the door). Our baby loves this book, and we don't get tired of it, either.
