I love the Henry and Mudge stories. My son had a hard time with reading, but the Henry series has helped him so much. He loves dogs and likes to read about a boy his age. It is sometimes hard to find a book for a child that says he doesn't like to read. I am so glad there are so many in the series for him to choose from. His reading has improved greatly, and I want to thank Cynthia for bringing these books to our children. Also these stories grow with him, there are beginner books, and they gradually advance.
My first grade son reads these. I like the subject matter because it doesn't include fighting/superheroes/name brands/etc. What surprised me was that my son likes them too. They are engaging for him - the topics are age appropriate so they appeal to him. The reading level is perfect for him - there are enough common words that it is not too much of a struggle, but there are always a few words he needs to work at which keeps it just the right amount of challenging. Every night he has to read for 20 minutes and he always picks a Henry & Mudge book. This pack is a great value vs buying them separately. We already had a few of them, but I bought it anyway and donated the ones we already had to my son's teacher. She was VERY happy as these are the perfect books for a first grade classroom library as well. They were a very affordable gift and it made my son so proud to be able to donate to his classroom.
This set introduces children to a long line of Henry and Mudge stories. With three or four chapters in a book, each chapter comes to a satisfying conclusion, but remains only a part of the overall plot of the book. Chapters are about 12 pages each. There is occasionally a full page of text. These are Level 2 "Ready to Read" Books which are appropriately described as having longer sentences, simple chapters, and high-interest vocabulary words. Henry is a sweet kid from a nice family and he has the kinds of interests and adventures you hope any kid might have. My five year old really enjoys the series and after we finished the books that came in the boxed set, he requested that we get other books in the series, too. He reads a chapter to me aloud daily as part of our bedtime routine. He looks forward to the time, and while I do have to help him with some of the vocabulary, he never complains about the chapters being too long or the words being too hard.
It is difficult to find first readers that actually are first readers. I tutor people with language weaknesses/dyslexia. When students begin coming to me for remediation, their self-esteem and confidence are around their ankles. Until they start regaining the confidence they had before they became "poor/striving/struggling readers", it is important they have books that support what I am teaching. The Henry and Mudge series works well, especially for students who love dogs. The text isn't as controlled as I like, but the words are more in line with grade-level vocabulary and subject matter than most of the books I review for use.
I gave this to my 7-year-old grandson for Christmas because years ago his older sister loved this series. My grandson told me he loves reading these stories, too. They are perfect for the fairly-new-to-reading child. The stories are a lot of fun.
My daughter who is in K5 loved this set of books. It was just the right level for her as she is beginning to read independently and enjoys reading "chapter" books because it makes her feel successful.
My seven year old son is an excellent reader, but he doesn't enjoy reading. He can read anything, but I have a difficult time finding books that grab his attention. The Henry & Mudge series did just that and he asked me to order more. We started with a single book and now have a few different sets. He loves them and I love that he's reading for enjoyment!
Do you have a child that is ready to venture to chapter books? These books are a great start. The books are longer than your typical picture book, with more text. However, the story has repetitive aspects that keep a child moving through the story. The main characters are lovable and funny. The words are common words you would find in your Dolch sight word list. I would definitely recommend this set!
