Well, on my own first read I would have had to agree with the one star poster, it is a very simple little book with only a few words per page and not much for discussing/pointing out in the pictures (each page is essentially "Goose, is our pumpkin the the ____ (log, apple tree, pond etc)" "No"). I find it repetitive to read but my son does love it and asks for it repeatedly so I suppose that is the real test.
We're starting to build a book collection ahead of our Autumn '14 baby. This was a great selection. It's a simple plot - Duck & Goose see a friend with a pumpkin and decide to get their own. They look for a pumpkin in all sorts of silly places before they finally hear about a pumpkin patch. It closes with a joke that gave my husband and I a good chuckle.I saw that some reviewers mentioned the book being oversized, but ours is the fairly standard board book size so that might have changed. We'll be ordering more Duck and Goose for sure!
My only real disappointment with this book is that it is rather unwieldy for the targeted age group. When it was purchased last year, I didn't recall seeing the prominent description: (Oversized Board Book) which is clearly now there. Difficult to manage a toddler and a big book on one's lap, and smaller children find it difficult to turn those heavy, thick pages. Others in the series are not identified as oversized. The story and illustration are okay, but I don't know if I will purchase more.
My son is three and still needs board books because he loves to rip pages out of books especially when he is mad. So from a three year old perspective, this book is too big to be this simplistic for any child over two years of age. The story is about duck and goose looking for a pumpkin because they see their friend Thistle with a pumpkin. They look everywhere, but a pumpkin patch for one. Thistle then tells them to look in the pumpkin patch and they get a pumpkin.Every other page has a three to five word sentence. If you are reading in a large group for story time for children under 3, then this book is perfect. But, I think 3 year olds will find this too simple and short as mine did. (Not all board books have one, three word sentences per page see Demolition by Sally Sutton or Click, Clack, Moo by Doreen Cronin) Also holding this at bedtime was cumbersome and almost impossible. I'm aware that I bought the oversized version, but just I didn't expect it to be this big, especially when it comes to board books! (It's about 10x10 inches.)
My children LOVE this book and all the Duck and Goose stories...I am getting them out of the library so often that I know I have to give in and buy some. My 4-year old in particular loves this Find A Pumpkin one because he thinks it is funny that the birds are looking in such silly places and he likes to say "no way" instead of "no" when the pumpkin isn't in the log or water, etc (he especially likes when they look on the tree stump...he's always says "no way, it's an acorn!"). He interacts well with it and the concept is of no challenge for him to grasp. Sometimes I find that I add lines and expressions (be creative) with it, which might be more for me then the kids, but over-all the pictures/visuals are beautiful and classic...my two-year old loves to look at these books and my four-year old loves to hear them and add his own lines, too. These books are made for young children and it shows. Good stories, good pictures and a good way to spend time with my children.
My 20-month old granddaughter LOVES Duck and Goose. Her favorite is the Christmas book, but she also loves the Pumpkin. I'm not sure if the appeal is the drawings or the story, but these books are some of her favorites.
I was walking through the book store looking for books for my 17 month old and this book caught my eye because of the beautiful fall colors. The story is short (but not too short), cute and funny, and I love the illustrations. This is our first duck & goose book and now I can't wait to get more!
This is one of my grandson's favorite books. He gets really excited whenever he sees Duck and Goose on the cover of a book. He wants this one read to him more than any other. He loves to shake his head when they ask if the pumpkin is in certain places.
