Because these are from the same company and packaged in the same way AND part of the same series, you might think these would be easy to read books for beginning readers, much like the Biscuit Phonics books. They AREN"T. I'm a kindergarten teacher and was looking for more books for my class in the Guided Reading level A or B -- these are MUCH more advanced than that. I think they are poorly designed because by the time a child would be reading well enough to read these, they are not going to want to read little "starter" books that look like the Bob books or early leveled library books. I was upset that they sold them as "Phonics" books because they are in no way phonics books aimed at kids just beginning to sound out words.
I bought these books for my 5 year old who is just learning to read. Reading is 'boring', but the superheros in the books make it 'cool' enough for him to want to read them. Each book focuses on a particular vowel sound, ie; long I, short O, etc, so we're able to learn about the different sounds in different words. Some of the pages are pretty difficult for him to read, so I don't expect him to be reading them on his own for a while; however, kids don't learn to read on their own. If you get these books for a beginner reader, expect to sit with them and help them learn.
I have to say that I love Batman and was SO psyched to see this book set for my son (my daughter has the Barbie one that is FANTASTIC!!). This is not as simple as it should be, the words are longer than a beginner can read. My son lost interest because he couldn't figure out the words. Too bad.
While some reviewers have accurately said that these books may not follow the classic "phonics" framework, they beat all of those books hands down on another level. They've got Batman. My son loved the characters and stories SO much that it gave him the incentive to learn the sight words and other "outlaw" words in the books. Now he recognizes them everywhere. Besides that, he likes them because they are more like "REAL" (his words) stories rather than the phonics stories where every other word ends with the same sound. I get that this is how children learn to recognize words, and he gets that plenty in school and other curriculum. To ENCOURAGE INDEPENDENT READING, the characters of these books were real superheroes.
My son loves these! These books are not nearly as intuitive as the BOB books, they can be used for Guided Reading but my emergent reader son cannot just pick them up and read them. That said, he LOVES to hear them and enjoys to look at them over and over and read the words that he *can* read. Big hit, I plan to buy him the Superman ones too.
I bought these for my 5yr old who has moved on from all the Bob books. He just loves them. The guided reading level is H-I on the set and my son is currently on E, but he has little trouble reading them and the picture clues are excellent. The key in the front of each book is great to go over with before hand, and it explains the digraphs, sight words, and what they call fun words they will be using in the that particular book. Books are written well for the reading levels they are designed for and provide enough substance where parents can review main idea, characters, setting, details, etc. We are looking forward to the Superman set when it is released. If your child is a Batman fan and is K-1, this set is fantastic to keep them excited about reading and growing in their abilities.
The books are tiny little paperback books that only take up about half the box. They are about 6 pages long each. While they are fairly easy to learn to read with, they are just not very detailed or long, and not well put together.
My six year old son loves these books! He's able to read them by himself and the fact that they're all Batman books makes reading even more fun. He also loves to keep the books in the box...
