My daughters and I have read ALL of the Dork Diaries books together. Here are 10 reasons why I, as a parent, love this series:1. Nikki takes pride in being a Dork! She thinks being a bit different from others is a good thing and encourages kids to take pride in who they are.2. Nikki and her friends love reading and volunteer each day in the school library. She and her friends collected and donated hundreds of books to give to a Children's shelter.3. Nikki also volunteers at Fuzzy Friends the local animal shelter. In spite of not knowing how to ice skate, she competed in a charity ice skating event and won $10,000 for the shelter.4. Nikki has to deal with a bully and mean girl named MacKenzie. She not only stands up to MacKenzie, but also typically outsmarts her.5. When Nikki sees other children being bullied or treated badly, she stands up for them. She is also very outspoken and was critical of how girls were being bullied on a popular TV show and the mentality of shallow, celebrity party girls. Most adults who complain about her comments have obviously NOT actually read the book because Nikki is agreeing with them that both bullies and celebrity party girls exhibit inappropriate behavior.6. Nikki is from a blue collar background and is teased by some of the wealthier children at her private school. In spite of this, she still is friendly, intelligent, witty, and generally secure in who she is.7. The book has very diverse characters, unlike most children's books today. Almost half of the school children reading books today are from diverse backgrounds. Nikki's best friends are Chloe, who is Latina, and Zoey, who is African-American. She also has friends in the book that are Asian and Jewish with one friend who uses a wheelchair.8. Nikki loves writing in a diary and drawing. She encourages children to write, journal and draw. Her best friend Zoey is super smart and dispenses great advice and her best friend Chloe loves reading.9. Nikki has a little sister named Brianna. In spite of the usual sibling rivalry, Nikki is a wonderful big sister who spends quality time with her little sister taking her to movies, baking cookies, playing dolls, babysitting her, playing hair salon, etc.10. Nikki truly loves her parents. She fixes them an anniversary dinner, serves her mom breakfast in bed, buys her dad a Father's day present, and makes a scrapbook for them for Christmas.Although Nikki is sometimes a bit over-dramatic and insecure like most teens her age, overall, she is a very positive, funny, warm and inspiring character. Most of the negative things in the book are either said or done by the character MacKenzie, who is the protagonist in the series. MacKenzie is a mean, shallow, snobby, self-centered fashionista. Protagonists in books are supposed to be bad people.I am thankful this book series has a positive FEMALE character and a role model that my daughters (and millions of girls around the world) can relate to and love.
I was SO excited to hear that the Dork Diaries series would be continuing with this second book, Dork Diaries: Tales From A Not-So-Popular Party Girl. I adored the the first book, the author has such a way with humor that I think all her jokes are funny and I just adore Nikki! And the situations Nikki finds herself in, oh man, I'm not the target audience but they were hilarious! There is something about the way that Nikki writes her journal that is so innocent and genuine that she's instantly lovable. In this book nemesis MacKenzie really starts to show her claws so it's really interesting to see how Nikki will handle these situations in her polite and innocence manner. Nikki's friends Chloe and Zoey are also a great backup duo to Nikki and her crazy ideas! While I would have loved to have seen Nikki's little sister Brianna a bit more in this book, she was still as funny as I remember her from the first book.I can see the Dork Diaries series going on for a long time and with each book Nikki is maturing a bit more and learning new things about herself. I love how this book ended and it's set up for what I'm sure will be a great third book to the series! Can't wait to read it!
Grand-daughter loves these books, she always keeping her eye's open for new books that are the Dork books. Her brother reads her books too, then they talk about the book and compare notes. Good talking at the table.
I loved the dork moments it really encouraged me to speak up to "makinzie" at my school.I loved this book and I encourage everyone to read them!
What parent don't love a book that gets their child to read? My 10 year old never enjoys reading, the only time she picks up a book to read it herself is when it is a school assignment. That was until she found the Dork you diaries series. This series was just what she needed to find to show her books are entertaining and read for enjoyment. A good book can give you the world. The pages are not over filled with text, so it kept from seeming overwhelming. The font and pictures are fun and youthful with our seeming juvenile. The great thing was this one book led into her reading the entire series and finding enjoyment in curling up with a good book.
I have to say this book was AMAZING and I just couldn't put it down for very long. I will get more of these awesome books. These for me are have to reads!!!! :D I was amazed by the illustrations in the book and most of them were absolutely hilarious! ;) I love this series to death and will continue on. I love the characters the most and they all make me laugh!!! :) I thank the author for making this series. - I hope you find this helpful and enjoy this series, thank you.
This is the second installment of the DORK DIARIES, the girls version of the DIARY OF A WIMPY KID books for boys.It is written in a diary form with drawings. When I told my fifth grade girls that I had the second book in the series, they got very excited, since most of them had already read the first installment.Nikki is the heroine of this series. She is in middle school and is a great artist. She has two BFFs, Chloe and Zoey, and a crush on a popular boy named Brandon. There is also a queen bee named MacKenzie. Nikki gets involved with the Halloween dance. She has to plan and organize it - and MacKenzie wants her to fail. The story is told in a very charming way and has a lot of good cultural references. You want to root for Nikki and boo MacKenzie. The story is a little unrealistic, but I still accepted it hook, line, and sinker.I enjoy this series and so do all the girls I have given it to. So curl up and enjoy this very funny story!Reviewed by: Marta Morrison
