"Phoebe is a remarkably real little girl, as bright and imaginative as Bill Watterson's Calvin, as touchingly vulnerable as Charles Schulz's Charlie Brown. And if these strike you as big names to conjure with, I'll go further and state for the record that in my opinion Heavenly Nostrils is nothing less than the best comic strip to come along since Calvin and Hobbes. Simpson is that good, and that original." --Peter S. Beagle, author of The Last Unicorn, from the IntroductionA boy and his dog . . . a girl and her . . . unicorn? It all started when a girl named Phoebe skipped a rock across a pond and accidentally hit a unicorn in the face. Improbably, this led to Phoebe being granted one wish, and she used it to make the unicorn, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, her obligational best friend. But can a vain mythical beast and a nine-year-old daydreamer really forge a connection? Indeed they can, and that's how Phoebe and Her Unicorn unfolds. This beautifully drawn comic strip follows the unlikely friendship between a somewhat awkward girl and the magic unicorn who gradually shows her just how special she really is. Through hilarious adventures where Phoebe gets to bask in Marigold's "awesomeness," the friends also come to acknowledge that they had been lonely before they met and truly appreciate the bond they now share.

It's so fun to discover a new comic that captures a mama's imagination as well as her 10 year old daughter's. I wish it wasn't so pink on the cover, because it betrays the truth that it isn't just for our little girls. I love her portrayal of the unicorn as it reminds me of my favorite childhood movie, "The Last Unicorn." I'm sure that isn't a coincidence as Mr. Beagle, the author of the book the movie was based on, wrote the introduction. Thank you Dana Simpson, for giving us such an intelligent, fresh, visually attractive story-world we can immerse ourselves in. And I love that candy-puking dragon!

Having read some of the original strips online, and learning this was a local cartoonist, I couldn't help but pick this up. Needless to say, I am not disappointed. The book itself is very well made, and the covers look great. Inside, you'll find full-color pages of subtle wit and hijinks that makes this series a keeper. I hate to use this comparison: but it's like Calvin & Hobbes, just swap a boy with a girl, a tiger with a unicorn, and add Simpson's unique character and perspective.Overall, very happy with this book.

We were flipping thru this the other night, planning merely to review it as one of my 7 y.o.'s pending choices for the next night. Next thing I knew, we'd read 1/3 of the book and we were both laughing! She doesn't get all of the jokes (which means there are years of future reading to come), and I don't find all of the jokes that funny--especially the ones that make her belly laugh. Therefore it's the perfect book. And she enjoys my Heavenly Nostrils accent...reminiscent of a very bad Downton Abbey... We're going to be sad when it's over!

Funny, cute, and touching. The two characters play well off each other and the other minor players are also interesting. The art style is also pleasing to the eye (IMO) and, while I have nothing against the modern "horse with horn on" image of the unicorn, it is nice to see the classical, slender-legged, cloven-hooved model cantering about.

I bought this for my 7 year old niece, who really enjoys it, but the humor is just a tad above her level (but it's good stuff for encouraging discussion). However it has quickly become a favorite of her brother (age 10) and my 9 and 8 year old sons (so much so that they'll stay up late reading it together with a flashlight - laughing the whole time). They've moved on to the second book and can't wait for the third one to come out. I've read a bit of it as well and it's absolutely brilliant.Like all really good "kid books" some of the writing is above the targeted level. In my experience kids thrive on that and it encourages them to stretch. It certainly helps that it's really, really funny. I would absolutely encourage you to buy this for any girl or boy in your life who is reading at or above the 4th grade level. Even teens would enjoy this - it's just that good.

Phoebe and Her Unicorn is charming, witty, clever, and original. Dana Simpson's enchanting and warmhearted comic strip has brought me back to reading the comics. Phoebe and Her Unicorn tells the story of nine-year old Phoebe and her best friend Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, who is a unicorn. These two very different beings from very different backgrounds delight in each others company and accept each other just as they are, flaws and all. The strip was formerly known as Heavenly Nostrils, and was only available online through GoComics.com. It is now nationally syndicated in over a hundred U.S. newspapers. When the comic went into syndication in early 2015, Ms. Simpson went back to the beginning of the story so those unfamiliar with the strip could catch up, but some changes have been made. This book, and it's sequel Unicorn on a Roll, allow readers to read the strips as they were originally written and also lets fans of the new syndicated strip to get caught up. I can't say enough good things about Phoebe and Her Unicorn. Also, Peter S. Beagle, author of the classic fantasy novel "The Last Unicorn," and screenwriter for the 1982 animated feature of the story wrote the forward to this book. How awesome is that? Btw, for those who don't get the strip in their local papers, you can still read it on GoComics.com. Fans will definitely want to add Phoebe and Her Unicorn and Unicorn on a Roll to their home libraries.

Got this for my 7 year old daughter and she loves it. She spent about an hour with it and finished the whole thing, then the next day she read it again, often coming to me to read her favorite parts aloud. I just pre-ordered the next Phoebe book - glad to add more books to our little reader's library.

This book is hysterical! Phoebe and her (sarcastic) Unicorn is one of my 8 yr old's favorite books. She has read it more than once and always comes to read me parts she thinks are particularly funny. It is great for getting a reluctant reader engaged and wanting to spend time reading because it's just silly tween humor, but it's smart humor and doesn't insult a kids intelligence. As an adult I also find it amusing, sometimes on a whole other level than my daughter. Definitely worth checking out. We checked it out at the library and she liked it so much I bought the first one and the second one (new to her) for Christmas.
