Lisa Yeeâs SUPERGIRL AT SUPERHERO HIGH has much to offer young readers. After Supergirlâs planet, Krypton, is destroyed she finds herself rescued and adopted by the Kent family --- the same family who adopted Superman. Her incredible powers develop quickly and in order to control them she is sent to Super Hero High, the aptly named school for young heroes. There she meets some of the universeâs most powerful teens and learns how to make friends, defeat villains and use her powers for good.I appreciated that this book did not rely on DC's most well-known superheroes such as Superman or Batman to save the day. All of the saving was done by Supergirl and her friends, showing the importance of teamwork and relying on the strength within oneself. It is exciting to me that this novel focused mainly on girls --- there is always a need for more stories focused on female heroes! This story had a great supporting cast of characters from the DC pantheon including Wonder Woman, Katana, Harley Quinn, Beast Boy and even Lois Lane. I often found myself most interested in the story of Supergirl's best friend, Barbara Gordon. I hope that the next installment of this series focuses on her. At times Supergirl could be too naïve and gullible to hold my interest, though that is part of character. Her navigating her new powers while coping with the difficulties of high school and the loneliness that comes with the loss of her parents and home planet added some much-needed depth to this story. I could not help but wonder how different this novel would be if it were geared toward a young adult audience as opposed to middle-grade.This book is great for all young readers interested in cartoon Superhero shows but are too young to read some of the grittier comics or watch the darker TV shows and movies. The story is lighthearted and easy to read, although it takes a bit of time for the action to pick up. I would recommend this story to those who enjoyed the first installment of this series --- although it is not necessary to have read it first --- and to young readers just starting to explore their love of Superheroes.Reviewed by Katherine Szabo.
I should start by saying that I am 28 years old and I bought this book for myself. I bought and read Wonder Woman at Super Hero High because Wonder Woman is one of my favorite characters. I really enjoyed that book so I decided to purchase Supergirl as well. Supergirl at Super Hero High is even better than Wonder Woman at Super Hero High.Supergirl ends up on Earth after Krypton is destroyed and she begins attending Super Hero High. The problem? Supergirl is NOT a good student. She befriends Barbara Gordon, the IT girl who wishes she could attend Super Hero High too. The friendship between Supergirl and Barbara is very interesting and each struggles with relatable issues. There is a mystery to solve, however, if you've seen the first DC Superhero Girls TV special, then you already know how this one will end. I still would highly recommend this book for any young superhero fan (or older superhero fans like me who prefer something light hearted) because the message is so positive and relatable. I look forward to future books in the series and hope there will be ones focused on some of the lesser known DC Superhero Girls.
I feel like right now thereâs a confession I should make. Iâm not a huge DC fan. My house is full of Marvel fans and thatâs pretty much where we stay. But I grew up loving Superman and Wonder Woman, so I wanted to see what this book, geared toward kids, was like. Did it capture the feelings I had for these heroes as I was growing up?Thankfully, yes, it did. Though it was still tilted to some new ideas. In this book, all the superheroes we know and love are teenagers, but their overarching personalities are still pretty solid. So Wonder Woman is amazing and near perfect. She has very few missteps and even the ones she does have are cute. And Commissioner Gordonâs daughter is a tech geek who doesnât quite fit in at the school even as sheâs keeping everyone together.Overall, I liked this book. It wonât go on my list of all time favorites, but it did introduce some of my favorite characters in the comic book realm to a new, young, audience. To me, that has a lot of hope. (Something that I feel many DC films are missing.) I loved how they handled the awkwardness here and that the book was geared toward younger readers.I did feel like a few of the situations were a little too perfect or too imperfect. I know the book is geared to kids, but some of these things can still be sharp, fun and witty. (Tales of a Sixth Grade Muppet Series is a great example of that.)If you have a child who is looking for more superheroes or has a passing interest in any of the characters here, youâre going to want to snag this book. And if you have a little girl looking for heroes, definitely add this to her library. Youâll all be glad you did !
