I am a big fan of Spectrum books, and I have several. The preview didn't allow you to see much inside. I was *expecting* a list of words in units, words that were run through several practices: synonyms, analogies, etc. all with the same set of words in each chapter. This has the Synonyms and Analogies, but there is no "chapter" list of vocabulary words, just individual pages with different words for each exercise. This is horrible. There is no teaching here, no definitions given, so if you don't know a word you can't do the exercises. I would like to return it.
My daughter enjoys working in this vocabulary workbook. She finished second grade, and goes into 3rd grade in August. I think this is a good work book to prepare her for third grade. She is in the accelerated reading class, and she found the first part of the book to be a review, and the last half to be more on her level.
Not as excited about their other books for the other subjects, but this book was well done. The activities and layout were engaging and fun enough. It taught concepts easily and my son grasped them. Its an easy 6th grade book and should be a great addition to your language arts program or a great summer refresher.
I bought Spectrum Vocabulary and Scholastic Success with Multiplication and Division, Grammar and Reading Comprehension workbooks for my (soon to be) third grade son. I wanted to help him be prepared for the next school year and these were a great purchase. They are full of different types of activities that students will enjoy. It also helps me to understand the type of material to expect for the next grade and what to help him with when it comes time for standardized testing. Worth the purchase and quick shipping as well.
Good workbook. We home school and this series of spectrum workbooks work well for us.
I think only if children have a vocabulary large enough can they read and write freely, so I focus a lot on my daughter's vocabulary study. I found this workbook very useful. This book focuses on practice for vocabulary development, including classification, synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, context clues, concept words, sensory words, plurals, suffixes, prefixes, root and base words. It also has test-taking practice section, which is very helpful to test my daughter's performance. She's already seeing how the techniques help her in her normal work. In the Beestar online vocabulary tests (a wonderful website beestar.org ), she is ranked high in the honor roll. She is now probably the top student in her class. Iâm very pleased with this book.
I got it for my son, he's starting 6th grade this fall and I wanted him to be prepared for this up coming school year, I've seen an improvement in his vocablary comprehension, it was worth the purchase.
In my opinion there is NOTHING special about this book. It's a vocabulary without a glossary/dictionary!!! My daughter is in the 2nd grade and is not challenged at all with this book. The only good thing I can say about it is that there is no set pattern to the worksheets so she has to read the directions and follow them each day.
