This is a nice book. The reason I gave it three stars is because I was looking for a Thomas book with new stories for my boys, and when I looked at the product description for this, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that we hadn't read any of them before. However, descriptions can be deceiving. For some strange reason, several of the same stories from this collection are circulating out there under different titles. "Lost at Sea" is also known as "Misty Island Rescue." "Danger at the Dieselworks" is also "Day of the Diesels" and "The Lost Crown of Sodor" is also "The King of the Railway". There may be other duplicates as well but this was very disappointing to me because we already have these stories. Hopefully this helps some of you avoid the same mistake.
I have a Thomas loving 2 1/2 year old boy. And we love other Thomas books like "Crack in the Track" or "Blue Train, Green Train." So I thought, perfect, a book with lots of Thomas stories, complied into one convenient book that I can keep on his nightstand for bedtime reading. WRONG!!All of these stories are about how mean all the trains are to one another. The common thread is supposed to be how "useful" Thomas is. But in order to feel useful, he must first overcome something, and usually that something has to do with the other trains making fun of him. Many of the stories have the other trains laughing and teasing Thomas for one thing or another...being small, having to attach a snow plow to the front of his train...I don't know about you but I don't want my son thinking that friends belittle each other. I realize that at some point, this type of behavior will be present in his life. I know that teasing and bullying is unfortunately commonplace in the school yard. But I don't need him to be learning about it at 2 1/2!! For a franchise that is geared toward toddlers and young children, I think these stories teach the wrong message. There is even a story about monsters in Thomas' shed. The drawings are really frightening for young children. Thanks Thomas for a months worth of nightmares!!We have only read about 5 of the stories in this book but I'm planning on hiding it or just throwing it away all together. There are way better books to be spending your money on!!If your child is a Thomas fan, get Crack in the Track, Blue Train, Green Train, Go Train Go...these are all about trains being useful without the torment!
My daughter loves this book, loves it so much that she has already ruined the binding and it's not very old. Some of he stories in here are shorter versions of the Thomas Movies, those are her favorite.
We read this every night with our 2.5 year old...although I do have to skip most of the stories as he likes to look at the pictures more than have me read the book (since it's a bit wordy for the attention span of a toddler). I wish the images were consistent as the pictures vary in style and date (some look like the old original Thomas characters and some more recent). All in all a great book if your child loves Thomas!
I was taken aback to find this book so beautifully produced. It's a great collection that will certainly find a spot bedside next to my 2-year-old ThomasHead. If I had one quibble it'd be that the art in two of the stories is kinda cheap, but the surprising art in several others more then makes up for it. Worth well more then the $10 is asking for it. A great deal.
My 2 ½ year old loves this collection of stories above all others. Just the right amount of story per page too keep her from constantly trying turn the page. I wish they had a few more volumes as we have been reading 2 per night for about 3 weeks now. She still loves them.
My 2.5yo loves this book above all else. We typically read 2 or 3 stories a night and he knows them by heart. He loves that some stories are condensed versions of the movies he likes and some are new tales. His favourite story is the monster story. We disagree with the one-star reviewer who says it's too scary for children. In that tale, the monster is a hedgehog all along. I'm glad there is a book already telling my toddler that there is no such thing as monsters. However, we have owned this book for a few months now and read it almost nightly. The binding has come apart and the paper holding it to the cover is tearing. Never mind the golden pages, this is not a heirloom book. Cheaply built.
We started giving Thomas and Friends to our grandsons who are teen agers now but still have their favorite Thomas items stored away for their future kids. Now our great-grandsons are huge Thomas fans and I can't wait for our next trip to see them so I can sit on the couch before bedtime and read these short stories about Thomas and his friends/adventures to them. It is going to be a heavy hunk in my suitcase but it will be worth it to share Thomas in the old fashioned way of reading, cuddled up with the little ones. Great-Grandpa can still get down on the floor and play with the engines and track so this will be a special way for Great-Grandma to share Thomas with them.
