We bought this book to help our daughter with potty training. The story has helped us encourage her to be confident. I don't recall the full version of the book, but this abridged version gets the story line across well and is just the right level of detail and length for a 2 1/2 year old. The book also seems very sturdy and is slightly larger than most of our other board books.
My memory of this book from childhood is of the blue engine repeating "I think I can" over and over and over again -- using persistence to overcome hardship. But in this version, that doesn't happen much at all. Oh well.
The abridged edition just isn't the same story. Too much cut and it misses the mark, The "I think I can" part is barely even there, which is the whole point of the book. Pictures are great and the same as the original though
This is an abridged edition. I don't have the original, so I don't know how it reads, but the abridged version feels like it chunks of the story are missing. It also prominently features a clown. I don't know why adults think children like clowns, but toddlers are afraid of clowns. My son loves the train, but doesn't like the clown, so he is sort of ambivalent about this book.
Given the big collection of Thomas trains we'd accumulated for our grandsons, I thought our middle grandson - who has struggled with things a bit as compared to his older brother, to whom things just naturally seem to come easier - would be able to get some gentle encouragement from this classic tale, and be able to relate to it and re-enact the story with little blue Thomas and some of his bigger, stronger friends. (It had been many moons since I'd read the book, and had forgotten that the little blue engine in this book is a girl train, but I didn't think that would matter.)First, this is a sturdy board book, with pages that are simple for youngsters the recommended age ("3 and up" is imprinted on the back) to turn without bending or tearing them, and they're coated so that any bits of lunch remaining on sticky little fingers can be easily wiped off. I personally love the old-fashioned feel of the illustrations (by George & Doris Hauman), putting me in mind of the classic old Thomas "Railway Series" books. Even though I think today's children are generally used to modernized illustrations, our grandson did just fine studying the pictures when he was younger and I read the book to him, but since the time he was just past 3 he's been reading the book to ME (with just a bit of help), and it's so funny that he uses such great intonation while doing so!You always wonder, as an adult, what's going on in a little one's mind... how much they're grasping of a story that's being told and the lessons contained therein. Both in watching him at play (with Thomas pulling his large friend Spencer up the steep incline of one of our playsets) and in the number of times he'll pull this book down off of the shelf, I may have my answer!
This book is a timeless classic. The cardboard pages are perfect for little hands that are tempted to tear them out. The story encourages little ones to keep on trying in spite of any obstacles. I enjoy reading this book and my grandchildren enjoy hearing it.
This is another of my favorites from childhood, it teaches the importance of believing in yourself and in helping others too. I remember many times having to repeat to myself I think I can, so I could get through hard things. This will be a book your kids remember.
My granddaughter just turned one and her mother said it's her favorite story. I had given them the paper version originally but unfortunately the little one ripped a few pages so that's how I came to purchase this great "board" book. No worries. She still loves it even though it's "abridged" LOL and can now easily turn the pages without mishaps.
