to translate and get the rhythm and pace right.This translation misses the mark. The other version, Chat Chapeaute, is much better, as is "Les Oeufs Verts Au Jambon". My two-year-old loves both of the latter.
the entire joy of Dr Seuss's "Cat in the Hat" is its rhyming scheme. "Le Chat Au Chapeau" is a prose story with no rhyming scheme at all. If you're after the plot, I suppose it's ok but don't expect the "Cat in the Hat" experience.
I have several language versions of the Cat in the Hat and other beloved children's books. The Russian version of the Cat in the Hat is WONDERFUL, as is the Yiddish, Hebrew and also the Mandarin - but this French version is beyond disappointing. It's a direct translation without rhyming- at all, ever- or even syncopation. Thoughtless and sad. The language of Molière is done a disservice as is Dr. Seuss- and any one reading this dreadful book.
Any translation of literature, especially the genius of Dr. Seuss, would be difficult. And the translator has ti decide on the priority of objectives to achieve. This translation doesn't create any of the rhythmic charm of the original. The translation of the plot is so out of sequence with the English, that it is useless to allow children to connect the English words to the French, even if a sequential translation would have lost most of the charm, it would have been educational. Also, the French translation seems to be several grade levels more advanced than the English, which makes the target audience different than the age at which these books are introduced to English speaking children.
The translator should be ashamed! This has to be the worst translation of any kid's book I have ever seen. There is no rhyme and no effort was put whatsoever... I just keep it for the English text. If you are buying this book so that your kid will learn or be exposed to French, I recommend something else, as this doesn't do the French language or Dr. Seuss any justice.
It is a great idea to have these books in French and English. The only problem is that some of the charm of Dr.Seuss is lost in this exact translation. The rhyme rarely translates from French to English. Other than that, the book is very well done and the words are exact so it is a good learning tool.
I loved it. I am trying to re-learn French, having take it through grade and high shook MANY years ago. I was able to find a video on YouTube of someone reading this book, so I followed along. Perfect!
