I'm a mom that has fairly restricted space when it comes to new books (we have too many!) and so we tend to use the library A LOT, and I tend to like books that have 'lasting power', which is to say that they can be used for a wide age group/a long time."A Butterfly is Patient" falls into this long lasting group. It's really lovely, with great illustrations, which is important when it comes to grabbing the attention of little-folk, and it has enough science, cleverly put, that it will be useful for the elementary years as well. The book really covers all aspects of a butterfly's life: from egg to adult, as well as what the insects eco-niche is, and how it protects itself from predators....The only shortfall I could find is that there wasn't a map to show off the huge migratory pattern of the Monarch. But other than that small flaw, it's awesome and worth considering for the home or school shelves.Pam T~mom/blogger

I bought this book to read aloud to my 2nd graders. We study the life cycle of butterflies every year, so I look for new material to add to the unit to keep it fresh. The artwork is detailed and gorgeous. The words are informative and thoughtful.I was so pleased with it that I ordered the authors other 2 books, An Egg is Quiet and A Seed is Sleepy.

This is a wonderful book. It is so beautifully illustrated and presents such interesting facts about Butterflys.I think it will surely stimulate an interest in science and learning for any child who reads it. I really could not be more thrilled to have discovered it. Wonderful gift for any child.

This is such a beautiful book. Each page has a sentence at the top written in cursive. Then the page is wonderfully illustrated with hand drawn then water colored, illustrations of caterpillars, butterflies, leaves, and so on. Each butterfly or caterpillar has the name on the top of it or underneath. The names are written in cursive. The pages have wonderful information about the butterflies. You could read this to little ones as a picture book just reading the sentence. Or you could do an entire science lessons with this book. That makes it great for ages 4-10. I also had my 12 year old use it as a beginners field guide to butterflies. Overall, I love this book.

This wonderful book is a splendid example of what I call "uncommon core" -- -beautiful writing, absolutely gorgeous illustrations, and fascinating information -- I use it in my butterfly storytimes and this middle-aged librarian learned a lot (e.g. the difference between a chrysalis and a cocoon - the latter is spun of silk, the former is a kind of exoskeleton formed from the caterpillar's skin; also that butterflies can fly a mile in 3 minutes -- faster than a human can run!) http://carolsimonlevin.blogspot.com/search/label/Caterpillars%20%26%20Butterflies

My daughter, who is 2, loves this book. It's easy to adapt the text for someone her age and just read the larger text. We save the smaller, more detailed text for her quieter moments. Her favorite part, however, is to compare the pictures of caterpillars on the front endpapers to the butterflies they become on the back endpapers. She loves this whole series.

Beautifully written - I've given this as a gift to children of all ages. We recently gave it again to my youngest niece for her 3rd birthday along with a butterfly pavilion. The artwork is stunning, beautiful, vibrant and detailed. The words and definitions are clear and leave room for discussion and reduction of ideas for younger listeners while the artwork captivates their attention and wonder to hear and retain those ideas. This is an excellent series.- Check out the rest!

This book is beautifully illustrated, and has become a great favorite of my 3.5 year old, although the reading level is aimed at older children. She likes to learn the name of the different types of butterflies, which have such fun and vividly descriptive names (Painted Jezebel, Great Purple Hairstreak).
