"An Army of Frogs" by Trevor Pryce,is a fascinating chapter book for children. I think children of all ages from very young ones to preteens would enjoy this book. In the realm of chapter books for young readers this book just might be King.Even on the digital edition the formatting is wonderful. The pages are colorful, each has a fancy chapter heading and the illustrations are top-notch. I can vouch for the fact that even children who are too young to read the story on their own, or fully appreciate the text, enjoy looking at pictures, they are vibrantly colored and there are a lot of them.As far as the story goes, there is a lot of action, excellent dialogue and enough humor to make you laugh out loud frequently. The characters are adorable and each one is unique. There have been a lot of books that feature frogs as a main character, but this is definitely one of the best in recent memory. The heroes are heroic and the villains are terrible! Just as an adventure story like this should have. This book is long enough to keep a bit more of an advanced reader happily entertained, but also simple enough for a new reader to accomplish mostly on their own. If you have children, grandchildren, or know someone who does, this would make an incredible gift. This review is based on a digital ARC from the publisher Amulet Books.
I got this to read to my 7 year old son. He liked it, but didn't really care to read it to himself as some of the bigger, or more confusing words held him up. He's smart and could pronounce them, he just paused a lot to ask what the different terms meant. I ended up reading most to him. He liked it enough that we got the second book.
Darel, an underdog frog, dreams of joining a fierce squad of fighters named the Kulipari. The squad hasn't been in action for a long time, because a protective magic has been cast over his village, the Amphibilands. Will the magic hold out when the evil scorpions come to take over? Or will Darel get his wish?In this fiction novel, there are courageous, friendly frogs who are led by the majestic turtle king in a quest to defend their home against the cunning, vile, and wicked scorpions, led by Lord Marmoo. Darel's best friend gets captured by the scorpions and Darel must sneak into their camp to save him. There are numerous battles and an action-packed war at the end. This novel also includes vibrant, attractive, and eye-catching illustrations. This book would appeal to both boys and girls from ages 6 and up.I gave this book 5 stars but would give it a thousand and one, if I could!Lila H., 9, Central Pennsylvania Mensa
My 10 year old boy loved it. He read it on his own and then was eager to have it read as a family. The illustrations are captivating and the story is excellent and moves at a great pace. The tone of the book encourages hard work and caring for others. We are lookign ofrward to the next in this series.
This book is simply Awesome! What an amazing kids book. The illustrations are super cool! If this could become a movie it would be super cool!
I purchased this book my 9 year old. He said it was little hard to get into at first. He really likes to read mysteries and action books. By 70% of the book he was enjoying it. I am giving it 4 stars because it took a while to really grab his attention but in the end you enjoyed it.
I just finished reading this book to my 8 year old son. He LOVED it! We had to stay up past bed time to get to the end, because we couldn't put it down. This is the first chapter book that has interested him. We have tried Skylanders, A-Z Mysteries, Magic Treehouse and none have captivated him like this did. He came running downstairs as soon as he woke up the last few mornings so we could read before he had to get ready for school. He even put down his IPad(!!) tonight to read this book. He even read a couple of chapters to himself one evening, also a first for this type of book. The vocabulary was advanced so I really needed to read it to him, but I did not mind, as I enjoyed the story too.He liked identifying the characters and places in the illustrations.I thought the themes of finding inner strength, meeting challenging and scary situations head on and standing up for friends and family in need were well handled.I highly recommend this book. We can't wait until next summer for the next installment to find out what happens to Darel and Gee.My thanks to Trevor Pryce and company for a beautifully written and illustrated book.
My 5th grader read this for his book report project. He loved the story and was enthusiastic to give his presentation. The vocabulary seemed appropriate for maybe a 4th grader to read on their own. It does have the same formula as many other books for this audience. A common wood frog (not Kulipari fighting frog w/ poison) wants to become a warrior frog, like his father. But he was born without the capacity to make poison. He has a friend/side kick that helps him train, a wise old turtle who advises him, and the nemesis. All key characters in the book help shape this common frog to help him achieve what he wants to be. There’s enough adventure and action to keep the readers engaged. The illustrations are done quite well.
