Hey Diddle Diddle takes a famous rhyme and puts it in a New Orleans setting with all animal characters. I believe I spotted a crayfish, so the featured creatures are authentic to the area. Like the other books in this series it's wordless, but the nursery rhyme is on the back cover if you feel so inclined to treat this as a story book and sit down and give words out loud to each page. I think it's great as-is just to look at, touch and let baby explore with his or her mouth.Hey Diddle Diddle is my favorite of the series because it just has a certain flavorful style that I like, and there are lots of little details on the page to look at. I own five books from the series and will cut and paste a similar review for all five of them on . I started out with two books and immediately bought three more and my 5.5 month old baby has been using and enjoying these books since about 4 months old. I let my baby hold the book and explore it on his own and I don't do much beyond pointing to something on the page and saying, "That's a cat playing a fiddle!" "That's an alligator on stand up bass!" or something similar. My baby doesn't constantly want to hear a 20 page story, he just wants to hear my voice while he joyfully attempts to rip up the book.Besides being a new mom, I'm also a librarian; formerly a Children's Librarian although now I work with adults. In any case, I'm aware of the importance of introducing the concept of books early on to get little ones prepared for reading one day and to teach them that books are enjoyable. For babies, that means getting them used to feeling a book (sometimes tasting, it can be hard to get them not to do that and it's how they explore), holding it and encouraging them to look at the pictures.
I was so excited when I saw that this book is INDESTRUCTIBLE: chew proof, rip proof, nontoxic, and 100% washable. How cool is that?? It's not a board book, like most other baby books - it's actually a paperback. If your baby is at all obsessed with paper like mine, then this is about to become a new favorite toy. I don’t know what magic material this book's “paper” is made of, but I have to say that so far, the claims on the front cover have proven true: my little one has spent the past two weeks chewing on it, waving it like a flag, snapping it around, dragging it through the house, and goodness knows what other tortures. Hey Diddle Diddle remains unscathed. No, really. It looks exactly as it did the day she picked it up. Actually, it’s cleaner, since I’ve washed it with soap, sponge, and water twice. (I’m still not prepared to believe it will survive the dishwasher or washing machine – can anything be that magical?)But this is just a rave about INDESTRUCTIBLES in general – I found the story itself a little lacking. I was disappointed that there’s no text. The illustrations do follow the popular nursery rhyme “Hey Diddle Diddle,” but I guess I just don’t understand why the words are printed on the back cover instead of on the pages. Maybe it’s to put the whimsical, mixed media illustrations under the spotlight, or maybe it’s because the pages are already quite busy enough. Hey Diddle Diddle features darker colors and an almost decoupaged style, with many different patterns and textures everywhere, including what looks like newspaper pages sneakily blended into the background. It almost reminds me of the oddness of Coraline or James and the Giant Peach.
