I was extremely disappointed with this book. The stanza that is supposed to say "Won't let Satan blow it out" now says, "Won't let no one blow it out". They also completely skipped the stanza that says, "Let it shine til Jesus comes". They have done a pretty good job of secularizing the song.This wording change is not even proper English grammar. "Won't let no one" is a double negative, which means that this stanza is now saying that the person will let someone or even anyone blow it out.The illustrations are done well, but the story that the illustrations are telling doesn't convey the meaning of this song. Though I guess they've already take out any real meaning with the wording change.
This board book takes the words of the well-known hymn and puts a story around them of friendship and fun. The illustrations are wonderful and will delight children time and time again. There are so many little details in the pictures that children will poor over the pages repeatedly. It is the first book illustrated by Shelagh that our family has encountered but we will be sure to track down more.
