My girls have been fans of the Elephant & Piggie series for about five years. We have almost all of the books in the series; they have helped all three of them learn to read. We were very sad when we heard that The Thank You Book would be the last Elephant & Piggie book, and we were looking forward to one last funny story with Piggie and Gerald. As The Thank You Book begins, Piggie declares that she is going to thank everyone who has helped her. Gerald worries that she is going to forget someone, but Piggie insists that she will not.And then Piggie proceeded to thank every secondary character in the entire series, and I tried not to cry. They are all there, and fans of the series (like my girls) will enjoy seeing familiar friends. Gerald continues to worry that Piggie will forget someone- who could she possibly be forgetting that thank? The illustrations are relatively simple. Gerald and Piggie appear against a plain white background, and this places an emphasis on their facial expressions and body language. Gerald and Piggie communicate with each other via voice bubbles; the book consists of a conversation between the two friends and their acquaintances.I would recommend The Thank You Book to fans of the Elephant & Piggie series. My girls laughed as they recognized all of Elephant and Piggie’s friends. If you aren’t familiar with the series, this probably is not the best book to start with because you won’t understand why Piggie is thanking all of these other animals. If that is the case, I would suggest starting with any of the other books- they are all funny books ideal for beginning readers. My girls and I are not sure what Mo Willems has planned next, but we are looking forward to it.
Mo I love you...Mo I hate you...Well, not really hate, but to think that never again will I rip open another box to see my two favorite characters smiling out at me. To hold up a new book in front of a class and hear cheers and applause. These two friends are simply beautiful. As an elementary school librarian I delight in introducing these two characters to my early readers. At our Spanish immersion school the stories are perfect for either our English or Spanish speakers with simple, but sweet story lines and illustrations that transcend language. For the Piggie and Elephant fanatic this book is a perfect goodbye. Favorite characters return, including that slippery Pigeon. Piggie and Elephant reaffirm the embodiment of friendship and love. More importantly, Mo addresses the reader, young and old, and hails the symbiotic relationship between reader and character.Thank you Mo. Thank you.---Anna
What a wonderful book! My daughter is in first grade and we had a hard time getting her to sit down to read to us before she discovered the Elephant & Piggy books. The characters are so fun and engaging, the stories are adorable and fun - they're just perfect books for early readers. I'm sad that there won't be any more Elephant & Piggy books, but this was a beautiful way to end the series. The illustrations were very cute - classic "Elephant & Piggy" and it was great to see all the characters come back to be thanked. We were so lucky to see Mo Willems himself read this story and act it out for the kids at a local story time. He was very engaging and you can just tell he loves what he does and loves the age group he is writing for. It definitely comes through in his work and we are so thankful for it!
My son was so happy to receive this book - but also kind of sad that it's the last Elephant and Piggie book. He has loved these books for so many year - it was this series that he first memorized and "read" back verbatim, with correct facial expressions and intonation. I'm happy that the series is ending at this age (he's seven); I don't think I would have stopped buying Elephant and Piggie books, even if when he went off to college!
Sad to see the end of Gerald and Piggie series. I am a retired librarian and read these books to children for many years. I understand the sentiments behind the story line of this book and my grandchildren somewhat enjoyed it, but I felt it to be more like watching the credits of a great movies. Nevertheless, will miss Gerald and Piggie, but this is an additional purchase. Buy other books in the series first.
SOOOOO sad to see the series come to an end, but what a great way to end it. When I read this to my students they were so excited to pick out all of the familiar characters from the different Elephant & Piggie books! They were so happy to see everyone together. What a special ending too! Another great Mo Willems classic!
My boys are huge fans of Mo Willems, so I have become a huge fan as well. Every week when we go to the library, my youngest boys bring home at least 2 Elephant and Piggie books. When we got news that Gerald and Piggie were being retired, it was a very sad moment. I may have shed more than a few tears. This book is beautiful. It was the perfect conclusion to a wonderful series. And, yes, I cried when I reached the end.
