This book surprised me! Sometimes when I read through a picture book, I think that it might be great for a story time crowd, but honestly, it's hard to know. I looked through this one and thought just maybe.... I have of course seen many books of this type, and am always on the lookout for any book that invites audience participation. With this one I had a couple of reservations. The colors aren't very bright. Would the kids be able to appreciate the monkey mayhem going on in these pages? The ending can be a bit tricky, so would they get the whole bait and trap concept? This one was a big hit! The kids were interested in the illustrations, and I had no trouble keeping them engaged through the wordless spreads. They totally got the ending, to the point where they wanted me to open the book up again at the end of story time to see if the monkeys were still trapped inside! While I was of course excited at the story time response, I think this would also be a fine addition to any personal collection. The illustrations are chocked full of clever nuances that are only to be discovered with repeat viewings. A spirited reading of this one will most likely guarantee lots of requests for repeats. This one is going into my permanent story time collection and is an enthusiastic recommend.

Warning: Do Not Read This Review! There's monkey shines afoot. Maybe you should read another review. Oh, no, now you've done it ~ you're continuing to read this review. I'm seeing monkeys, lots of them and they've got access to paint. Picture it. They're in a tree painting the leaves on. Globs of dripping leaves. One is strumming a guitar. Uh-oh. Some toucans have joined them. Monkeys and toucans, who'd a thunk it? At least there's no ALLIGATOR! Oops, spoke too soon. Catastrophe time. How are you going to keep the monkeys, toucans and Alligator under control? Maybe you could play a trick on them, set a trap. And then CLOSE THE BOOK!You get the idea of this book. Silly mayhem and slanted humor preschoolers to first graders will enjoy. You can camp it up in how you read it. Afterwards, might be fun to make your own book with animals they like, and wouldn't want to escape from its pages. They dictate the story, you write it and they illustrate it with some drawings and watercolors.

OH NO! YOU ARE READING THIS REVIEW!!!! :-)This is a super fun/funny book. I brought it into my 4-year-old's class to read to the preschoolers, and they loved it so much that I had to read it AGAIN! I think that children this age really like the idea of things that are forbidden ("breaking the rules") and the silliness of the book really made them giggle and laugh. The pictures are also fun and engaging. I highly recommend this book for the rule-breakers in all of us.

Fun kids book with audience participation. My 2 year old son loved it. Even my 11 year old son thought it was entertaining. He laughed from the start after opening the cover of the book. It’s reverse psychology—“Do not open this book!” of course that’s exactly what you do—open the book. Since we did not heed the warning we were greeted with signs like “Come on…seriously?” and next to a skull another one read “Here is the last guy who read this book.” It was as if we ignored caution tape and entered a danger zone. Throughout the book there were more warnings to stop before things got worse. My youngest son looks at the book every day. He sings a taunting melody (similar to “Jaws”) until he sees a monkey on the loose, then he laughs on every other page after that as he sees monkeys jumping, painting, and playing the guitar. He likes to scream in mock terror when he sees the jaws of the alligator which he thinks is a dinosaur so he yells out “Di!” At the end he quickly closes the book and says “Bye.”

This book has my 5 year old highly animated, jumping around the room like a monkey and expanding upon the content as we read it. It has captured his interest more than any book we have bought for a long time. We love this book.

This book is cute, and VERY fun to read aloud! My 5yo stepson asks us to read it over and over, then takes it to "read" to himself, and then play like the monkeys have escaped and he has to capture them!

My grandkids enjoyed this book. The younger one (age 3) was fearful and didn't want me to open the book, but after we read it through a few times, he got the hang of it and enjoyed it. I'm still confused about how the "trap" at the end "works," but otherwise this is a fun book. Illustrations are 5 stars. But this book is not literature.

Purchased this book for our kids. They love to laugh and really enjoy interactive, humorous books. This one is interactive but it's not funny like I had expected. It's actually kind of dull. I mean, we still read it but they don't enjoy it as much as our other books.
