I LOVE Frank Murphy books! He has a special talent for sharing facts about historical figures. As a mom of a kindergartener, first grader, and second grader, and as a first grade teacher, I find his books perfect for this age group. Usually when younger children read biographies or informational text, they remember few facts and have a very basic understanding of the text. Frank Murphy's style and syntax enable my children and students to understand and remember the historical details. Take a Hike, Teddy Roosevelt is yet another one of Frank Murphy's gifts to children's literature. Thank you, Frank Murphy for igniting my children's and students' enthusiasm for history!
Take a Hike, Teddy Roosevelt! (Step into Reading) For my beginning reader granddaughter's Easter basket - leafing through it, I think she'll enjoy it. She loves to hike and be in open, wide spaces, so this should speak to her.
Great book to introduce kids to the national park & conservation concept. It also is a nice capsule summary of Teddy's life of public service. Well illustrated, with straightforward text. Will help to Green the next generation.
Frank Murphy has a magical way of communicating with children, and in Take A Hike, Teddy Roosevelt, he joyously captures the insatiable curiosity that compelled our 26th president to dare greatly! Murphy weaves a charming story drawn from Roosevelt's life and memoirs, and illustrator Richard Walz helps bring the legend to life in pictures that captivate. In the book, Murphy tells how Theodore Roosevelt overcame challenges as a sickly child to become a legendary outdoorsman and explorer, in addition to being readily recognized as a trailblazing U.S. President! This is the kind of book that inspires children to not only learn more about history, but also offers an opportunity for some readers to better relate to the Roosevelt who faced unique struggles as a child. Making a personal connection with a famous figure, and learning that the road to greatness is sometimes self-made, are important messages Murphy weaves into the book. Illustrator Richard Walz's based his drawings on authentic photographs, helping to reinforce Roosevelt's love of nature and the American outdoors as well as his larger-than-life persona. As fresh and brisk as the outdoor air Teddy Roosevelt so cherished, you will find this book to be "Dee-lightful", full of charm and adventure, and a solidly wonderful celebration of a powerful American figure!
