So...disclaimer, I wanted to KEEP this book for myself! I was expecting to only learn about the presidential pets, but to my surprise it gave a lot more info about them. The book included a short story and many facts about the presidency along with a caricature. My niece, no I didn't keep the book, loved the book and wanted me to read about the different presidents according to their interesting pets.
This is a fun book, with not only information about the animals at the White House, but a few interesting facts thrown in as well. My son and I are studying the presidents this summer. To make the study fun, we are learning about the president's pets, their children and what they liked to eat. Learning about a president's accomplishments is wonderful, but books like this help to make the presidents more "human" and more memorable. I recommend this book.
I gave this book to my granddaughters (who are 6 and 7) for Christmas as they are both animal lovers. They really liked the book and were able to read it by themselves. Its a fun way to present historical facts in a fun context.
Combines history and pets â with a little poetry thrown in. Provides the opportunity for students to choose a president to learn a little more about (they are more interesting once kids know they had pets) and write a poem about their own pets or the pet they would want to live with them in the White House when they become president. Great tool.
Presidential Pets is a fun romp through the lives of all of the US Presidents and the sometimes unique pets they had while living in the White House! It not only spotlights the unusual pets that some of our past Presidents kept, but it also gives a snapshot of the men themselves. Everything from when they served and what their wives' names were, to what their jobs was before being President and notable accomplishments. Next time your child asks for some interesting facts about a certain President, or needs to do a report for school, reach for this book!!
Julia in her two published books writing for children and young adults have a meaning that can educate our youth about facts and accomplishments by our forefathers and daughters (in "Skies Over Sweetwater") that may have gone unknown. She brings this information in a very readable (Skies) and with "Presidential Pets" a very fun format. Children can learn about our forefathers in a more informative way. When I was a child I had to memorize the names of the presidents not knowing anything about them, take a test and then it was out of my head. The factoids, the stats and accomplishments she presents offer so much more than our history books do. The poems are fun to read and to listen to if being read to. This is a great book!
I bought this book for a preschool child, but it was too advanced. I read it and was impressed with the amount of information it contained. I will save it a couple of years before giving it to my grandchild.

On each page there are many incredible fact tidbits that are about that certain president, weird oddities pertaining to him, and accomplishments and other facts you may not know. The book goes through all the presidents. I am a big history buff but I learned so much fun trivia from this book. It was a fun, and informative with lots of creative and imaginative drawings that make you smile. Just a real joy. I needed this! Knowledge, a snicker, and cartoons... and good fun read!!! Loved it, need more of these books. The way it is written, with funny poems mixed with silly facts and true facts, it is good for everyone. Pet lovers would love this book. The perfect gift for that person who has everything. I received this book from NetGalley for a honest review and it in no way effected my rating or review and boy am I glad I got it!
