My 11 month old daughter loves these books and we've been ordering them steadily since she was 6 months old, with never a disappointment till this one. The usual illustrator, Renee Graef did the cover art for this book, but for reasons unknown the pictures in the book were done by Doris Ettlinger and it would appear she had maybe a day to bang them out. Whereas the other books' pictures are well-thought-out scenes with interesting perspectives and beautiful colors, the pictures in this book are incredibly boring. Things -faces, Ma's skirt, the outside of the cabin- take up large portions of the page for no apparent artistic reason; if anything, it reminds me of someone trying to finish a long term paper in a hurry by using an extra large font. Compared to the other books, it's just dull.

My 8-year-old daughter loves the LH books. I started her on these picture books when she was a toddler. She especially loves this book. She loves the "Pop goes the Weasel" song in it, and she loves that it's about a birthday. If you have a little one that's interested in LH, (or that you want to be interested in it) this is an excellent addition to your library.

I gave this book to my 3 yr old for her birthday and she really liked it. She has virtually all the First books. She loves the drawings and I like the no playing on Sunday part, my daughter and I have a discussion everytime we read. I highly recommend this and other First Little House Books for little ones.

This book is a great way to introduce young readers to a classics author and reel them in. The pictures are beautiful and the books are very readable for first and second graders. They love to read about the "olden" days!

This book does not share the light-hearted tone we've read in many of the other books in this series. I am returning because of the way it portrays the sabbath. It is looked at as a day to do nothing and the girls are not allowed to do anything but sit and be quiet. Everyone is illustrated as sad looking and just waiting for the day to pass and be over. Not how I want my children to believe it should be spent.

I grew up reading the Little House Series...now there's a series that lends itself nicely toward little kids. The language is nice and simple to the point where my 3yr. old was excited to listen to it (she could understand the whole book) and yet it's not too simple to be boring to younger elementary kids. My 7yr. old likes to read them by himself! I now own the original set for myself, the "My First Little House" set for my kids and I've even purchased books from this series for kids of my closest friends.

I am a lifelong Little House fan and was so excited to add another "My First Little House" book to our home library for my daughters. I loved the first book that I purchased from this series (Little House in the Big Woods). This book, however, was a HUGE disappointment from a content perspective. A good chunk of the book was spent discussing how the Ingalls family spent their Sunday. It portrayed the Sabbath day as a day of complete and utter boredom and legalism. I have several problems with this. 1) That's not the impression I had about how the family felt about Sundays from the television show. The family was always excited to go to church together in their Sunday best and then spend the day together over picnics/ with friends/ etc. This book has the family sitting at home, not able to do anything but read and wait for the day to pass. 2) This is not the message I want to send to my children about what the Sabbath day is all about. Our family loves going to church and spending Sundays together. It's just not the right message. The only positive thing I can say about this book is that the illustrations are beautiful, as with the other book in this series I purchased. I am going to try some more books from this series, but as for this SPECIFIC book -- A Little House Birthday -- I am returning it... that's how much this Little House fanatic dislikes this book.

The "My First Little House" books are fabulous! I started buying them for my daughter when she was 3, and she's almost 4 1/2 and still loves reading them. We have quite a few of these books now and I would eventually like to purchase the entire series. It was also a coincidence that we started reading them when we were on vacation in Wisconsin, so my daughter thought it was neat that Laura and Mary lived there and she was there too!One funny thing (depending on your sense of humor) - I was explaining to my daughter that Laura and Mary lived a long time ago, so of course her next question was, "Are they dead now?" and this was a frequent topic of conversation for a while when we were reading the books! Not in a bad or morbid way, she was just curious. And we gave one of these books to my daughter's school class a a gift, and apparently one of the children in her class also commented on this! Just thought I'd mention it...
